I was thinking about how bad I want to get back to SDC and I wound up finding some great video on YouTube of people going through the Flooded Mine. I played one of them once.
And then twice more after that.
I went to my local Bass Pro here in Independence, MO. and I actually.....I cant believe I am going to admit this to ya' all......well, first off, there is a really cool live duck and fish set up to look like a creek and waterfall and old pipes. Anyway, I actually noticed a pipe, pointing straight up and down, that had water squirting out of it that reminded me immediately of the pipe above the convict who is stradled on a pipe and cranking with his arm. It looks like that pipe over his head and the water comes out just a little less than that pipe in FM.
Now....to notice something like that....is that passionate? Or have I just fell off the deep end?! :-\
Ok, I will now pick up what's left of my sanity and scoot. ;) ;D
I'd say you're right there with the best of us. I see, smell, hear, taste something that reminds me of the city every day.
ya'r passionate andy. its 1 wagon i think none of us will fall off of very soon. heck, my brother pauses SDC & branson commercials just so we can watch'm....
Andy.. STOP immediately!
step back from the computer.
couple of deep breaths.
drink of cold water.
close you eyes real tight.
Wait, Wait, Wait,
NOW Open your eyes what do you see?
If all you see is the SDC logo or the SDCFans logo, relax, your as normal as the rest of us!! LOL! Hope this helped!
HAve a great Day!
I truly understand.. I have been to the park 4 times already this season and I am itching to go back. I have to wait like 2 weeks.
Perhaps we need a thread for SDC Anonymous - a little rehab program for those of you who collect too much, attend too often, know every nook and cranny, and post more than the typical fan on SDCFans.
For those of you who don't get enough of SDC, perhaps you can convence the powers that be to rent the rooms above the ice cream parlor...the Silver Dollar City Hotel that used to be ran by Shorty Kellums on Beverly Hillbillies. I'd bet for just a little bit extra, they would rent the celebrity suites, ya know, the rooms Jed, Granny, Elly Mae and Jethro stayed in. (Or stay nearby: Rock Lane Lodge was where the cast and crew of Beverly Hillbillies really stayed during filming in 1969. It's on Indian Point, and is called something like Rock Lane Resort or something.)
happens daily my friend....
Ahhhh, my friends, my brothers and sisters, my true compatriots! I am truly among my people! ;) ;D
I would like to say.... (standing up and looking at all of you)..."Hello. My name is Andy and I am addicted to SDC!"
Someday, folks...we have GOT to get a SDCFans reunion! Or....union, I guess since there hasnt been a full gathering yet I take?!
sanddune...I did my breathing, got a drink and exhaled accordingly. I.....I believe I am ok.
LOL! ;) ;D
Oh, I adore that area of the Indep Bass Pro!
And you are totally not alone... I was getting visions of SDC the other day when it was warm out and the asphalt smell was wafting around. *sigh*
HB, i thought this was the site for SDCA?
Andy, glad your ok, I was concerned,
Tina, ye i forgot about effects of the asphalt smell on us. Will have to work on that problem.
Its okay, my son and I go on "vacay" via youtube at least once a month. We play ride the roller coaster when going up and down hills in the car, and if he sees his daddy on the other side of the walmarts when we are shoppin he shakes his fist and yells UGLY!! So you are not alone.
Places I've been to get my SDC fix since last visit
cracker barrel
Har ber Village (went there last week, I think I'll stick with SDC
Bass Pro
Driving through the woods last week
2 hours on youtube searching SDC
2 hours searching old Hee Haw videos
Alas. I do believe my case is hopeless.... :(
I love Har Ber Village!!!
Who thinks they could sell a few SDCA t-shirts?
OH NO HB!!! what have u got up your sleeve now?? LOL. I'm in... details??
Here is a 6 step program...
1. Admitting that one cannot control one's addiction or compulsion;
2. Recognizing a higher power that can give strength;
3. Examining past errors with the help of a sponsor (experienced member);
4. Making amends for these errors;
5. Learning to live a new life with a new code of behavior;
6. Helping others who suffer from the same addictions or compulsions.
I think SDCfans fixes this addiction!

1. ok, I'M ADDICTED. No i can't quit anytime I want
2. God loves Silver Dollar City ;D
3. Next time, I won't leave my wallet in my hotel room (although you tend to save money that way)
4) Next time I'll hand my wife my wallet and I'll bring more $$$
5) Next time I go I will ride wildfire and go to one of the shows I haven't seen before
6) Any of y'all need help?
HEY okie!!! I question your #4!!????
I have NEVER saved money by giving my wife my wallet..
My wife may be reading this pretty soon. understand? ;)
LOL! Gotcha! YEA! I always save money when the wife has my wallet.. ;) ;)
:-X :-X :o :o
I have enjoyed reading through this thread! You are all pretty funny. Keep it up!
When I walk through Bass Pro I get the ol' SDC feeling also...Why does Bass Pro, or rather what is it about Bass Pro that helps give us a temporary SDC fix?
I dont know josh, maybe the rustic, woodsy designs/displays.? Not sure, but your right it does help... but my closest bass pro is an hour away and it is a small store..
Bass Pro does it for me cuz we always stopped at the Springfield location then Lamberts then SDC, so its a holy trinity kinda thing in my home ya know.
OMG! Someoe mentioned the asphalt smell earlier and that made my day! I opened an account just so I could post this lol!! My family loved SDC so much when I was little!
When I went to college and started growing up I would smell that asphalt smell in say, a Wal Mart parking lot in the heat of the summer and just stand there, remembering!! That's so great that someone else understands that lol!!
Welcome Flynnlee! This is a great place to talk SDC! Lot's of good people here!
Speaking of smells...how about the smell of burning coal at the knifemaker or blacksmith shop? The musk of FITH and FM? How about GM? The Candy shop, Woodcarvers, Big Jacks and even walking out you get hit with E&D's! Great! Now I have to go back to SDC to get my fix.... :-\
there is nothing like standing in a parking lot with your eyes closed on a hot day and just sniff real big. I almost get teary eyed every time! anytime I hear anyone say fire in the hole, anytime I have taffy, anytime I smell black powder burning, anytime I hear blue grass music, every time I open the cabinet and there are mugs from all my yrs going to SDC or the boot shaped cups from Dixie Stampede, any time I smell pork rinds.... I mean the list is endless. I even have dreams with something SDC in it. my husband laughs at me cause if I like something I become obsessed with it and SDC is one of those things (if I like it it's a passion if I don't like it then I will never like it) the hubby just doesn't understand he didn't grow up going to SDC, he grew up in Texas. No I think everyone is normal, or at least we are all weird together lol!
welcome sparkles.... but you know you ahve done now?? you have fueled up a top ten list.....
Top ten smells of SDC.. how about it andy?
I dont think I need to do one, sanddune. Seems like it's been done, but just no numbers to it. I think as many smells as has been discussed, all they need is just to be put in an order.
But I believe the asphalt smell would have to be number one. You dont get the aroma of FITH, FM, HH and others on an everyday basis like you do asphalt!
Y'all get the feeling that the "aura" thing for us and SDC I have brought up so much is kinda like the "karma" belief in sports and everyday life.
yes your proabbaly right andy..
asphalt would be #1 for sure!
I remember one time, when my dad & I were on a roller coaster in Sea World in Orlando, Florida. We were stading in the que-line, and this little boy asked his mom, "hey, do you think this will be as good as wildfire?" my dad & I quickly turned around, and started up a conversation with them about SDC. It was like we were family, or had just run into old friends; there we were in Orlando, Florida talking about our beloved Silver Dollar City.
thats a great story dollarcityboy..
One of my friend's mom asked once, "Don't you ever get tired of going there?" I just shook my head and smiled.
She'll never understand.
Everytime I smell hot asphalt, I almost cry!! Asphalt might stink, but it is my favorite smell in the whole world! Even before I realized how much my life revolves around SDC, I would notice what the smell would remind me of.
I remember walking out of the mall on a summer afternoon when I was, probably, 6 or 7. I smelled the asphalt and couldn't help but pointing it out. Mom rolled her eyes. She's gotten used to me comparing everything to SDC, it doesn't phase her anymore. I'm pretty sure she expects it! :D
Ha, that's pretty funny DollarCityBoy!
And Tiffany, it is amazing how many different senses can so quickly whisk us all back to Silver Dollar City. Surely there is some medication, or therapy for all of us. ;D
Things that take me to SDC from OKC
Asphalt, Atomic fireballs, rocking chairs at cracker barrel, butane, the smell of gunpowder, etc etc etc
atomic fireballs????? explain please. :-\

I don't wanna be fixed!! I'm very proud of what ever it is we all have ;D
I bought black lace fingerless gloves today, because it reminded me of: wait for it....
The saloon show at SDC.
When Show Choir went to sing at SDC last December, all us girls bought pink garters to match our black and pink theme!! The director HATED it!! Since SDC was our first stop, we snuck in the garters right before our two other shows so when the director saw them, it was too late to say anything about it ;)
I'm gonna turn my old show choir dress into a saloon girl outfit for Halloween.
And when I walked out of the mall today, I got that reminiscent asphalt smell again!!
We still have apple butter from our May trip.
Going to YouTube about once a week & put in the search bar " Silver Dollar City July 2011" to see what new videos might be there.
First place I ever had atomic fireballs was SDC. i ALWAYS associate the two. Don't know why. I guess I'm just nuts.
I was thinking of the difference between passionate and overdoing it. Passionate means you absolutely love SDC, wish you were there always, and when you are there never wishing you were somewhere else. Overdoing it would be missing it so much you dress up like Alf Bolin, rob an Amtrak train then hope they put you in a prison that floods so you can try to escape. :D
Well duelist,?
I would have to say the most of us are all passionatly overdoing it!
AND enjoying every bit of it.
Does I count if I dressed like alf bolin and pretended to rob my parents for Halloween.

Just make sure your parents are in on the gig, and your mother doesn't mistakenly hit you over the head with a frying pan. ;)
I have an oscillating table fan that I set to be facing me last night. I had a dream I was sitting at a window seat on the train because of the constant breeze from my fan. :D

Thats a pretty good imagination you have there.!
All you need now Tiffany is a friend to blow one of those wooden train whistle, and you will be all set!
I have a friend who's fiance is MADLY in love with SDC and he told her to plan their wedding. She wants to suprise him by having it at SDC. She doesn't really have a free weekend anytime soon but she would like to see pictures of the places mentioned in the wedding packages. The wedding isn't until next April. That's when he is supposed to be back home from the Army. Hopefully for good this time.
I have pictures of the church and the carriage. Does anyone have pictures (inside and out) of the Reunion Hall? Or does anyone have pictures from a SDC Wedding? ???
It would be greatly appreciated!

My sister was cleaning out her closet the other day and found her old train whistle! Everytime she would come out of her room, whenever she needed something, she would blow the whistle nonstop til she got back into her room. :D
Concerning the weddings, I'm sure you have probably already visited the SDC wedding site, but here it is just in case you haven't. It doesn't have a great variety of pictures though.

He doesn't know she is planning of having it at SDC. He's knows he's getting married, he just doesn't know where.
Ohhh I was going to do that for mine but when we set the date they were full booked the whole season. Tell her to get her wedding date secured pronto!
I was trying to suprise my wife with renewing our vows for our 25th. anniversary, had made tentative arrangements with the City, but the wife didn't want to go to Branson then. Ended up babysitting the grandkids and eatting our anniversary dinner at Ryan's.
we renewed our vows at Silver Dollar City our first anniversary and it was actually all my wife idea and a surprise at that. It was very nice.
I looked on Google and didn't find anything........ (as far as wedding pics for SDC).
But, you know what I have never had a problem getting exactly what I ask for from SDC guest relations. I would call them up and ask them to send you some pics. I am almost certain they would.
Oh and for the fan who's husband is from Texas and doesn't "get it". Wow, so sorry! lol
My husband is from NYC. I wasn't sure if he would "get it" or not. Our first season there together, we came home with just about ever CD sold on the park (show), he video recorded the Echo Hollow and Train Shows! He listened to the CDs every day at work till the next year, of course his NYC co-workers thought he had lost his ever lovin' mind! lol haha
Um, he got it, needless to say! lol And is just as passionate about going as me now. His parents are always wanting to go on cruises to the bahama's and he's like no I would rather go to SDC, you should come too, they have never been yet, lol. I'm not sure if they will "get it" though. lol But, thankfully Hubby did! lol haha
Another thing I found on Netflix quite by accident, as I'm ashamed to say I didn't even know this show existed but netflix starts suggesting things for you after you have watched so many shows/movies, and there is this series The Flatt & Scruggs TV show. If you have netflix I highly suggest it for a SDC show fix! I even love the Martha White commercials in it! lol We just found it tonight, and my husband was laughing all the way through the first episode! haha
Also there is several radio shows we listen to in the car that gives us our SDC fix, one of my favorites is All Star Western Theater, we have been listening to this series for years. It's older so you will have to find it online and ask some one for a copy or what have you. (right now my CDs are packed up as we moved half way across country from NYC to Kansas and I can't find nothin'! And I'm full term pregnant due any day...so rumaging through boxes hasn't been a priority lately.). We also like the Bickerson's, and The Couple Next Door, and many other OTR (Old Time Radio) shows. All kind of give me that SDC fix when I need it. However, you can listen to a new show via internet called Prairie Home Companion that's another "SDC show fix" I get! lol haha
I personally wish SDC would have a internet radio show, I would listen! They could put on the Echo Hollar show and such, some of the older recordings if there is any existing of the street shows and what have you. One of the best ones they could probably broadcast all day every day is the Saloon show since a lot of it is improv, (the audience participation part) it could/would be different EVERY show! There was one show we seen at the Saloon I will NEVER forget. lol This guy from the audience that day that they pulled was down right hilarious, they were asking him basic questions and every answer was so vague you just bust up laughin! I think he was nervous to be up on stage, cause he forgot every thing. Like they asked him where he was from and he said home....and then they said what do you do for work, oh this and that...he was hilarious! Believe me, I would be there listening!
Which leads me to another thing, I believe SDC is missing the boat on a huge marketing thing where they could rake in some real money! My husband and I went on a cruise 10 years ago for our honeymoon, back then any "show" or just about anything you did on the cruise was recorded and for a price you could buy the DVD! I am thinking really how costly could it be to set this up with all those "improv" shows they do at the park. My husband and my step father have both been picked from the audience more then once at the Saloon, my nephews and nieces has been picked from the audience at other shows at SDC to do some of the improv stuff on the shows as well. I know my family would be more then happy to pay the price to buy the DVD of such. We didn't buy any DVDs on our cruise cause we never got selected to be in any of the shows, and none were that great in my opinion. BUT, I know for a certain we would of bought those Saloon show DVDs, and I know for a certain my husband would also buy the train show DVD! He loves that darn thing, he has dreams of retiring and working for SDC driving the train! I am not kidding this is now his dream job! haha (he loves trains by the way, that's really what he does in real life too! lol Works on trains, for 15 years now so it's no passing phase! haha) But, to me seems like a great souvinere, doesn't cost much money for them to produce, and doesn't take much room in our home! And I know my husband would be buying every one him or any of our family ever show up in, along with the train and echo hollar ones regaurdless, as he always tries to record them himself each year on his own any way, but with out having expensive "real" stuff to do this with we never get the quality of such that we would like. So again, I am sure it would be one thing we wouldn't mind dropping some money on. And we aren't real "souvinere shop" type people.
And as a BTW, I had wanted to get married at SDC too, it was always my plan/dream, but when it came down to it was really really sick while planning the wedding. (I didn't know I was in what is called Diabetic Keytone Acidoses, I didn't know I had diabetes, I had type one-the childhood kind). And we were trying to do things on a budget as well. So I gave it up. Now, with the website being so easy to navigate (back then it was very basic with very little information on it), I see that getting married there is so cheap (I mean in comparison to other places, I did pay less for ours cause we just got married in a city park and what have you but still I had no idea we probably could of swung the SDC money!) I wish I would of stuck with it and did it there. But, like I said I was very (in fact gravely ill, they only gave me two weeks to live, and I was only released from MICU at the hospital only days before getting married) so I just didn't have the strength to plan it there like I wanted, and figured it would cost too much any way so just went with in my own home town. However, after I have now seen the prices we HAVE to do a vow renewal there! HAVE to!
when I am feelin the SDC blues I text ChaCha and ask them height req. for certain rides.....
It turns out they are moving to be closer together, because he is getting paid more where he is. They are going to elope instead of having a full blown wedding. :'(
They have a elopement package!

I know, but I think they are going to do it after she moves, so it will probably be done there.
ordered a steamed apple juice at the coffee shop hopin it would bring me SDC memories!! It kinda worked and was pretty good stuff!
Picked up a couple of the SDC BBQ sauce packets after I was there Monday. Even McNuggets taste good with that sauce .(I know.... I'm a hopeless case)
I constantly catch myself calling Branson "home" even though I was raised 3 hours away from there and I don't technically live in Branson. Does anybody else feel that way, not just with Branson, but with other places even though you weren't raised there? Or am I just crazy?
I have been coming to Branson since I was about 4 yrs. old. Before that, my grandparents always took me fishing with them on Bullshoals Lake. I won't say how long ago that was, but...Branson will always be home to me. I can close my eyes and remember what it looked like 30 years ago. I remember how long it took to get from Shepherd of the Hills to Highway DD. I can hear the train whistle - my favorite "sound" to this day.
I was born in St. Louis and lived in the county for the first year and a half of my life (not that I remember much :D). In '66 and '67, we lived in Pontiac (on bull Shoals); from then till '72, we lived in Baxter (south of Kimberling City), going to SDC at least once/year. From then till my sophomore year in college, we lived in St. Louis county again.
As far as I am concerned, however, the years on the lakes were the important ones, and I am most at home in Ozarks (I can't stand being in cities). I live near Rolla (still ozarks, if not deep in), now, but the greater Branson area (to co-opt a phrase) still feels like "home" to me. Someday, Lord willing! I will return there to live.
In the meantime, the seaon passes this year go a loonnngggg way toward keeping me properly combobulated.
It is for sure home, I wish I could afford to move to the ozarks. I always feel so much better, not just mentally but physically.
I was sick as a dog when I went there a few years ago preggers with DD1. I told my husband I knew once I got there I would feel better, and I did. Something about the ozarks is VERY healthy for me. It's not just a mental thing for me it's something physically about the ozarks that is the place for me to be. Of course that's where my family is originally from, but moved to Kansas when there was no jobs left there. (about 60 years ago). I go and look at my family's grave yards (my family owns two grave yards there with generations of my family laid to rest there), and my family's old homesteads, and such and so yes it will always be "home".
Funny you should say that!
Between the end of December to the beginning of April, I don't feel as "alive" or as happy as I do when I can take frequent trips to Branson. During the 'dead' months of Branson (when most of the shows are closed, and SDC isn't opened), we don't take hardly any trips. We're also recovering from Christmas bills. But the second I step out of the car when arriving in Branson, and inhale that beautiful mountain air, all those negative feelings I had for 3 months just disappear and I can start being myself again! :)

It's funny you mention that because Silver Dollar City truly is my crazy pill medication! I go into the park all stressed, and trying to make sense of my hectic life. I leave feeling refreshed, relaxed, and rejuvenated. :D
And then, as pulling onto the 76 strip to leave, the severe depression begins!
At the beginning of the summer, me and one of my friends were driving to SDC and she was using a GPS. I told her we didn't need it, cuz I could probably drive there with my eyes closed, but who ever listens to me? The GPS was telling us to take weird exits and we would have ended up on 76 in the middle of that awful traffic. I told her to take a different exit than the GPS said to go, then she got mad at me and kept saying how she paid all this money for the GPS. I finally convinced her to do it my way by saying "Were we planning on staying in Branson all night?"
She said "No."
So I said, "Then go the way I tell you or we'll sit in traffic on The Strip and if we're lucky, we might make it to SDC tomorrow."
She got annoyed and said "Fine"
(she's the one in my profile picture, in the white shirt. I'm the one in purple.)
haha! Maybe next time, she'll let me drive!
I literally know my way around SDC, and Branson better than in St. Louis where I have lived my whole life! Funny how the brain works!
I'm sorry people..... I just dont get the GPS thing???!!!????? ??? ::) ::) ::) ??? ???
must an age thing. i check a map before i go anyplace i am not familar with..
Just my opinion. not trying to start debate..
I had to borrow my grandma's car while mine was in the shop once, and her car has a GPS built in. I was bored one day, so I put in a random destination in the GPS and followed every direction exactly how it said to go. I got so lost using that thing!! Luckily I was in the next town over so I knew how to get back home!
I just got back from psychology, and the teacher had us do a relaxation thing (basically "go to your happy place"). She had us close our eyes and do our best to relax. As she was describing everything, like picture the trees, think of the smells, try to hear the sounds... I couldn't get SDC out of my head! I tried, but with every description she gave, it kept bringing me back!
Even when she said, "Think of a meadow...." I pictured the Square on Main Street.
And as we were walking through our imagination land, she said "You get tired and want to sit down. Do you find a log, or a rock? Where do you sit?" I 'sat' on one of those rocks walls they put around trees and flower beds.
I THINK I'M LOSING MY MIND!! AND I LOVE IT!!
thats right! sdc is "our" happy place.
What i want to know is did you get your replacement DVD set? Beverly Hillbilly's?
Speaking of navigating, a GPS unit will always get you to your destination - eventually. Nothing beats plotting a course on a map, although I still keep my GPS unit just so I know how many more miles I have until I finally get to Silver Dollar City. ;D
Silver Dollar City is also my happy place. Whenever I am feeling stressed, I just play some bluegrass music, and start flipping through pictures from my previous visits.
True story! Two summers ago, I was using my GPS to look for an alternate route around St. Louis traffic on my way to Branson. (yeah, yeah, yeah - I can drive to Branson blind-folded, but that St. Louis traffic - yikes!). Anyway, Sylvia (GPS voice) began telling me to "turn around when possible". GPS was guiding me to Anchorage, Alaska! So much for a shortcut, huh?
gilligan, funny. BUT did Sylvia get you around the traffic?? LOL
My GPS voice is a guy. I don't dare let a woman navigate.
I'm teasing! Just teasing. ;) :P :)
see ozark? I have always wondered about that detail!!!!!!! :o :o :o
Sylvia was of no help at all with an alternate route! ??? I might think about replacing her with a man's voice. I can buy "John Wayne" for a small fee, but I'd rather spend that money on a Sullivan's cinnamon roll.
I like using the map app on my phone. With my location turned on, it shows me where I am but doesn't try to tell me where to go. If I type in what I'm looking for, it pinpoints that location and I can pick my own route.
As an old artilleryman from an armored cavalry unit, I compulsively conduct a thorough map recon before going anywhere unfamiliar, or when looking for a different route to places I've been before. And then I just drive it without even looking at the map, which drives my wife crazy.
Okay, on a long trip I'll occasionally re-check the route when we stop for breaks, but that's about it.

Not yet, but I'm going back Oct. 8!
Yesterday, I looked up the train robbery show on youtube and wrote down, basically, the script and I found myself reading it three different times today!
I was watching an old home video from SDC 1999, and most of the jokes from the train robbery are still the same. They are still as funny as they ever were even though I've been hearing them several times a year for 12 years!
Tiffany, it's official. You are not passionate, you are obsessed!
But, aren't we all? ;D

no....we did wonder how much it would be to have a plot in the firemans graveyard! lol

At one point this past Saturday, I was sitting outside the photographer's shop at the bottom of Cardiac Hill waiting for my wife.
As I looked up the hill, I was struck again by the fact that I could barely see the top of the hill--and nothing past it--because of the trees and other greenery. I marvelled at the policies that have allowed the City to coexist with the Ozark landscape to such a degree. While I've been in greener attractions, none has the same mix of atmosphere, industry, enjoyment, and the Ozarks.
On the square later, I took the time to look at the plants and trees with a fresh eye. The colors, the variety, the exuberance of the growth all meld into joy for the eye and rest for the soul.
What's NOT to get passionate about?
I guess if it's someone you know or close to you it's uplifting and meaningful. If it's someone you don't know and are not close to, it could be thought of as nasty or morbid :).
^ Very true, perspective is everything.
I feel like this website is sorta like a support group.
The other day, my grandma was lecturing me on wasting gas money by going to Branson all the time (everytime I see her, there is always something I do she doesn't like). Any time before I joined this website, I would have gotten mad at her and try to explain my way out of it. Now, anytime she brings up that she should be the one running my life and SDC is mentioned, I just nod and let it go because I know I'm not the only one who feels like I do!
I love my grandma, but she's crazy. She's one of those people who, let's just say, I don't know where she gets her facts, because when something is mentioned that she doesn't like, she won't let the other person finish before drowning them out with her disapproving opinions on the subject.
I was at her house killing time yesterday before I went to a school play. We were watching a western because my step-grandpa is more obsessed with them than I am. She didn't like the movie cuz of all the shooting and Indians attacking and basic western movie stuff. She was complaining so much, he didn't even say anything, he just got up and left the room lol
Grandma then turned on the news and something about StL Cards came on. I was trying to hear about Tony and Albert, then grandma went on "I'll be so glad when this Cardinal crap is over, blah blah blah." and completely drowning out the tv. I gave up and figured I'll google everything I want to know later.
I love her, but she's crazy!!
But the point of my story is, before this website, everytime somebody brought negativity towards SDC to me, I let it get to me, but now I know other people understand why SDC is special, so I let it go instead of trying to defend myself.
Well said, Tiffanylynnt! I used to ask my wife "Do I obsess about SDC?" (Her answer was "Yes, sometimes"). I also take relief from all the other fanatics who found this site. If you're going to have an addiction have a healthy one! I'm also addicted to westerns. I thank SDC for that as well. :D
tiffanylynn-I can think of two people off the top of my head who are negitve like that. They are walking fallacies....My inlaws.....its rather special.
now see trams, i have the same problem with my mother in law... When we go to the city she gets all irrate and stuff...... just plum out of control..........

Times a day. My mom threatens to ground me but I still do it any way. Shh dint tell her she didn't knOw. ;)

I also love westerns because of SDC, and Jesse James. That might have something to do with growing up 5 miles away from Meramec Caverns and my first job (not really job, I wasn't paid) was working with my cousin at the Jesse James Wax Museum in Stanton.

My sister can be excessively negative toward the City. It makes me so mad because she has no reason to hate it. She complains about it from the day it is announced we are going to the second we walk thru the front gate, but after that, she has nothing but a smile on her face all day until she falls asleep on the way home. Seems kinda suspicious... ???
The other day I told her she wasn't allowed to talk to me ever again because she said something mean about SDC.

I can close my eyes on FITH and know exactly where I am before I open my eyes! I also know exactly when to say "Fire in the hole!!!" based on what seat I'm in. I can also do this with "Here's a bucket of laughs" and "Red Flanders!" and I know every word to the song ;D

I have a Jesse James fascination as well. This summer we went to KC and went to 2 different Bank Robbery sites, as well as Lexington (where he was shot). My friend lives in Stanton, and every time we head out there, I regret never having gone to the Wax Museum. a few years ago in college a guy in my art class did a museum/gallery review of the wax museum for our upper level art criticism class (you should have seen the conceited professor's face!). My review wasn't much better, I reviewed the Lewis and Clark Museum in St Charles MO.
I have done some research on the James family, and have found 5 instances of my family name in the James family tree. My name is not that common, except that we have a pretty good legacy in MO/ civil war.
My brother had a fascination with Jesse James when we were kids and on the way home from one of my many surgeries we stopped there and my arm was in this contraption of a brace and my brother tied my shoe, and the little old lady in the shop was pleased as punch that he would be so kind as to tie his sisters shoe......little did she know he grumbled the whole time he did it! lol.
Have another passionate or overdoing it............you know your passionate when the wall paper on your computer is the map of the city!
I have the map saved on my computer for quick reference. However, my desktop background is always something Silver Dollar City related. It just gets me in the spirit each time I log on. :D
I see the conversation had turned to Jesse James...and Tiffany, I wondered if you could ask family members about Jesse James Territory, a roadside attraction/theme park that used to be at Sullivan? It existed in the late 60s/early 70s until Six Flags killed it. Long before your time, but I'm curious what your family or family friends that are older than you remember about it. I visited Jesse James Territory several times as a kid, and my cousin was the Undertaker in the street skits that revolved around Jesse James being captured and hung on a gallows. In the end, the gang members shot through the noose and Jesse made a quick escape! If you look back on the "other parks" heading, you will see a long conversation about Jesse James Territory and the fact that it is now not anything more than an empty field on the edge of Sullivan with some houses and small industrial businesses around the permimiter of the land.
Junior, sorry I keep forgetting to ask people about the Jesse James Territory. I'll ask my Aunt Alene if she remembers it. I should see her Saturday. She would probably be the one to know about it because she has lived in Sullivan since 1942!
If I can get my camera to upload to my computer, I'll post a picture of my Christmas tree ;)
I always end up being the unofficial hospitality liasion for the smoking area. Anyone needs to know where something , I try to help them out. Besides, why do any of us need the map. Dont we all have it memorized by now?
A couple summers ago, I was in line for the Giant Swing and there was a mother & daughter trying to figure out the map. They wanted to ride WildFire after the swing so we walked over there together, without even concentrating on the desination, and they were like, "How did you do that!?"
:) :) Congrats. Now if SDC would hire "tour guides" and all you did all day was walk people to their destination......a lil song and dance thrown in here and there for amusement.....you would have a job!

we should have scout badges:
1. Helps fellow visitors find way
2. Recite train robbery by heart
3. Fast up Cardiac Hill
4. Watch 50 Shows Badge
5. Watch 100 Show Badge
6. Eat at Mollys Mill for Breakfast
7. Watch Flag Raising
8. Ride ________ 100 Times
9. Ate 100 Peices Taffy
10. Made a Candle
11. Mailed a Post Card from the Post Office
I would already have all the badges!
Funny someone mentioned SDC tour guides. They did that for a few years in the early 80s. You would sign in where the guest relations building is today. A tour guide would walk you around park with a group of 10 to 15 people. The tour guide would point out various sights and shows, rides, and then you were on your own. Many people left the tour while in progress. One of the stops was at the diving bell! I think they may have had a nominal charge for this at first, later I think they were free. The tour guide "boardwalk review" thing ended about '84 or '85.
I figure 9 out of the 11 for me... where do we pick them up at? i will need to buy a new leather coat to put the pins on..... or maybe we could get patches? and sew them on a denim jacket??
im thinkin an orange sash like them fun boy/girl scouts wear. You get the famed log and axe badge when you join!! :)
I have a map from 79' that marks the location where the tours would depart from. I would post a pic, but the brochure is in my locked up office, and I won't be back to work until the 3rd. Junior had it about right, the tours would depart from the area near the Water Clock after signing up.
I dug up out of my files a 1978 brochure and park map that mentions and shows the location of the Boardwalk Review Guided Tours of SDC. When you look at the Flickr photos click on the scans and they will show an enlarged version on your screen. http://www.flickr.com/photos/juniordugan
nice junior, 7.95 to get in AND they had the free after 3 thing going on too..!
Yes, that was the time before the multi-million dollar rollercoasters. It costs alot more to run the park today.

Great picture, Tiffanylynnt! We do a Wild West tree with assorted cowboy/indian things and SDC ornaments.
Very nice Jr. The 79' brochure also had the same write up about the tours.

Do you ever get funny looks when you give directions? I was in the Tin Type shop a couple weeks ago (see picture to left), and a man comes in and asks the worker if she knows how to get to the "pickers". She acted like she didn't know what he was talking about, so I jumped in. I asked "Do you mean the homestead pickers?" He said yes, and I gave him directions. But I don't know if he believed me, because he gave me a funny look and walked the other way.
If we ever have our SDC Fans buttons or shirts made, maybe we can add "unofficial tour guide" to it.
When I was leading my Show Choir friends to PK, Robby kept saying "Are you sure this is the shortest way?" (We were coming from GE, I took them down the spirally ramp). I said, "We could go that way (I pointed towards Main Street), get stuck in a huge crowd of people, and go down that really big hill, and get there sometime tomorrow." He rolled his eyes lol
So its not just strangers that don't trust us SDCFans (who knows best)!
In my delirium to get to the City I have set up my tent and round up pillows and blankets and am officially camping in hopes it will be reminiscent to staying at SDC campground and SDC the next day.
To clarify: the tent is set up in my front room. Inconvenint but fun!!
Ok Trams, that may actually be overdoing it!!! lol.
Hahaha. My kid was uber excited!! We had fun camping indoors.
We camp in our living room all the time! We would love to go to the backyard, but nobody in our neighborhood knows what a "dog pen" is. If we are in the backyard, we get some unwanted quests while we're trying to sleep.
We've camped indoors several times as well.
Do to a money cruch I didn't come in 2011. Not sure for this year, my kids have gotten season passes and say they will let me be their "bring a freind". My wife wanted to kill me because I acted like I was having withdrawals all year long and spent a lot of time on this web site and watching SDC videos on Youtube. Its really bad when you site and watch webcams of Branson for hours, particuarly when the streets are empty.
I hope you get to SDC in 2012 Oldsdcer. I enjoyed meeting you on park in 2010. Do you still have your brightly colored shirt?
yes oldsdcer, I also hope you make it this year..
let me the 1st to make this offer.... IF at any time this year anybody on this site wants/needs to use 1 of my BAF, and can meet me at the park accordingly. let me know! I would be glad to help anybody out if i can.

Some good video there!!
This morning, I wore a light grey dress with silver shoes, and a white "jacket" over a purple shirt with a silver sequin belt on the outside of the jacket. I didn't realize how much "silver" I had on until after Sunday School when I went into the bathroom before worship service. There is a tall mirror on the wall (the ones to look at your entire outfit all at once). I looked in the mirror and I thought to myself, "Oh man, people are gonna think I'm crazy!" - because of all the silvery colors, also because I had accidentally mentioned SDC in Sunday School that morning. lol
I just saw a commercial for a show on TLC called "My Crazy Obsession". I think you know where I'm going with this...

Well my family got tired of me mopping around and have bought season passes and are bring me to the City for my Birthday in over opening weekend. Hay it works to play on their feeling too.
21 days to go: Set up tent in house and pretended I was camping in The Wilderness
15 days to go: YouTube marathon of best SDC videos
12 days to go: Visited my SDC season passes and a dreamt of opening weekend
9 days to go: Made camping list of items needed for trip
4 days to go: Went shopping for said supplies
2 days to go: Visited passes again in anticipation
1 day to go: Made ititerary of the trip (again)
Day to go: Sit in class and watch clock and jiggle waiting for noon. It takes forever.

I just got back from Missouri Youth Convention in Overland Park, KS. We pulled up to the hotel and they had just repaved the parking lot, so that kicked off my 'homesick for SDC' feeling.
The theme was "Vintage" so there was a bunch of stuff in the lobby of the convention center and in the room where the services were held that looked like they came straight from Cracker Barrel's wall, so there was another thing!
Point #3 for SDC: Wednesday night was the first service and they kicked it off with an older preacher singing a medley of good ol' Southern Gospel tunes to go with the vintage theme. My cousin is a youth pastor for his church, and during the medley, I glanced over and he was one of the few people singing along to every word by heart. One of the few people included me. My friend who was standing next to me kept staring at me and trying to sing along, but you could tell she probably hadn't heard any of the songs a single time in her whole life (deprived child). She was giving me weird looks, and all I said was "I was raised on this music!!!" I think there was a little bit of Tutterrow Telepathy because I looked over at my cousin and he smiled right at me, probably because it was our Grandma who would always have get togethers and bluegrass (Grandpa's favorite) & Southern Gospel singing (Grandma's favorite) on the back porch was always the main event (besides dinner). And it just so happens that Southern Gospel Picnic is one of my favorite festivals!
Before each of the services, they had announcements on the big screen, and of course, there was an announcement for Praise in the Park which so happens to be at Silver Dollar City, Oct. 19 & 20!
And I also didn't realize that every single shirt I packed to sleep in had SDC or Branson on it until after I got there and was digging through my suitcase looking for something.
So even 200+ miles away, SDC never leaves me!!
And also, on the way back home, I noticed a store called Branson Tractors :)
Looks like I'm the only one posting on this one lately, but today was a "first date" and our conversation turned to SDC and Branson at least 4 different times. I don't think you're overdoing it at all. I usually drive my wife nuts with how much I enjoy it, but she puts up with it because she knows I live it.

This past weekend I went on a road trip with my mom. I was driving after dark when Mom said that even though I couldn't see it, we were driving through a pine forest. I replied with the obvious response in that situation: "Look to your right. What do you see? Trees. Look to your left. What do you see? More trees. Now folks, you may have noticed that the trees on your left look like the trees on your right. That's because you are in the woods." My mom looked at me like I was crazy. ::)

How-do, I do the same thing! I like to stand out in the middle of the church parking lot after services on Sunday and just breathe it in. All that's missing is the smell of fresh-cut cedar and a little bit of exhaust (some sizzling food wouldn't hurt either). We need to bottle that stuff!
AHHHHH!!! They repaved our parking lot at work too. Yesterday I walked to my car, inhaled deeply, and it felt good!

Since I don't have school today, I promised Mom I would run errands for her. I had to go to my grandma's to pick up something and she had just finished making cinamon rolls for a friend's birthday. The second I opened the door... oh my gosh y'all!! And of course they had just repaved the street outside her house. I walked into her living room with a huge smile on my face and Grandma's like, "What is wrong with you?" ;D
Nice post Tiff. I was at a grocery store over the weekend and the asphalt was getting hot. My kids were with me, and when I started smiling they knew exactly what I was thinking. My son says I am an addict and obsessed with SDC. What do y'all think?

I must say that Silver Dollar City has turned me into a bit of a snob when it comes to food. Went to a Springfield Cardinals game this week. Everyone around me were getting funnel cakes, and they smelled so good, so I had to get one. I was sorely disappointed. SDC has spoiled me: my funnel cake just did not compare. I do the same thing with peanut brittle. I won't eat it if I knew it came from somewhere else. It's just never as good.

I am notoriously bad about drinking enough water. It's not that I don't like water, and I'm not drinking anything else like soda, I just forget to drink water during the day. I decided if I carried around a water bottle I might be better about drinking. I got a nalgene bottle to carry around, but the top screwed on and it sweated all the time and overall just wasn't as convenient as I first thought. I was better about drinking water, but still not as good as I should be about it.
Then it dawned on me: I have a ton of SDC mugs I "liberated" from my parent's garage sale. Double walled (so no sweating), no screw top (I use a straw instead--so much easier), and it makes me happy! All I have to do is look over at my mug and I'm guaranteed to smile. (Plus I'm drinking more water, which was the goal in the first place. hahaha)
Staying hydrated, plus keeping Silver Dollar City on your mind? Sounds like the perfect way to stay healthy, and happy. ;D
I'm not having a very good day and almost of the verge of tears, all I can think is "What I wouldn't give to be a SDC right now."

Awww, Tiffany, sorry to hear that. Virtual hugs sent your way!
I'm sorry to hear about your day Tiff, but it will get better. Silver Dollar City is my happy place too. :)
There's always Youtube, Tiff :(
I'm much better now. Thanks! <3
THIS IS A PROUD MOMENT! I am now officially a jr. citizen!!
I have enjoyed reading this thread! It brought back so many memories of visiting SDC as a child! We lived in Berryville, my Daddy worked at The Passion Play, and I loved living there. Now that my family has moved to central Arkansas, we became season passholders to SDC. Our first visit is this weekend! But it has made me smile to read these posts. Thanks for sharing all your favorite things about the city! I can't wait to leave on Wednesday. We'll be in the city on Thurs and Fri. Lots of fun is coming our way. :)
Had a long day at work today. I never thought I was going to get to go home. I was feeling desperate. Finally got to a stopping point. I ran down the hall at work saying "I'm getting out of here no matter what!" and made the corresponding "whooshing" sound in my head. Cracked myself up! :D
My best friend didn't have school today, because seniors always get out a few days before everyone else, so I dragged him a long shopping this afternoon after graduation practice. (He said it was better than sitting home alone.) He is also the one I drag to SDC a lot and make him stay for the concert (he hates country music). We went to Target and ended up by the shoes (imagine that...). I bought a pair of cowboy boots, but while I was trying them on, he said, "Don't those look like the ones the girls wear in that GAC show?"
I halfway grinned and said, "...maybe..."
(I also own a pair of tan fishnets... :P)

That is funny! When our son was 3 years old he would say that and then blink his eyes very rapidly. We finally figured out he was doing the "strobe effect" that would appear after the miner ignited the dynamite. :D
I dropped my sister off at her bf's house and his grandpa was there. He noticed I was drinking from a SDC travel mug, and he said, "Isn't that place just the greatest!" and he's from Montana :)
Then my sister's bf said, "Don't get her started." lol
Love the boots tiff.! well you should be all costumed up now~!
Yeah, pretty much :D
My dad has been a hater of SDC for a long time and yesterday he made a referene to the 97 pound copper-headed-rattle-moccasian. I about swalled my teeth, and they aint even false... yet
My best friend is having a baby in December and she already said she wants me to be there for his first trip to SDC :D
I just had a "Really??" moment...
I'm babysitting a 2 yr old who asks questions about EVERYTHING. A commercial for medicine came on and she asked, "What does OTC mean?" and without missing a beat I said, "An Old Time Christmas."
She looked at me funny so I corrected myself, "Over the counter."
Lol
thats pretty good tiff, i catch myself doing the same thing, someone use initial or capital letters and i read it like it was SDC news.... LOL..

;D ;D ;D ;D ;D Love that, Tiff!
I'll be at SDC in two weeks and I just can't stand it. I joined this forum (I would have earlier if I had just known about it). I've been making plans and remaking them. I have been looking at youtube videos of SDC and looking at all of your pictures on this forum. I've made little paint documents on my computer of what I'm going to pack to wear on our trip. I've planned pretty much everywhere that we are going to eat.
I've basically been stalking their facebook page. It's crazy.
Also, on the note of the asphalt smell. A year ago, my college was repaving their parking lot or something and every time I went outside, it smelled just like SDC. I had one friend that agreed with me, everyone else thought I was crazy. Didn't know that the smell was as big of a thing to other people, too!
I can't wait to go. I'm trying to plan to be there as much as possible this summer!
lindseytoni, Welcome! I think you'll find yourself in good company here! ;D
Well personally I think SDC is awesome and me and my husband go as often as we can go. Its family friendly and wholesome place. We love Branson and one day plan on moving there probely within the next few years. Being passionate about something is good thing.....
