Title: Will YOU buy the Parking Pass for $18.00?
Post by: mhguy77 on November 03, 2011, 11:35:29 PM
The times stated they would have a discounted Preferred parking pass for $18 a year starting 2012.
Does this sound attractive to you?
What are your thoughts ?

Do you think you save any time parking here?

You do save time if you aren't prone to arriving early or late. If want to come in during the first hour or so of operations and you don't pay for parking, who knows how long it will take you to park and where you'll end up. Parking at SDC is much more of an ordeal these days than it used to be. Used to be a no-brainer to take the free parking and laugh at the people who paid good money to park a few feet closer. These days it may well be worth the convenience of not having to snake through 2 miles of lots with people trying to jump out of line and park wherever they feel like it and so forth...

I've always thought paying for parking when you have a season pass is not right. But, i understand where they's coming from. I always get preferred parking now-a-days, but dont know if i'll go for it or not. I try to get to the park every 2 months, but it never works out.. The wife says shes burned out on SDC, so who knows how many times i'll be going next year.

I always feel it's not a complete day if I am not there for opening ceremonies.  If I can't make it when the park opens I feel I have missed out on something.  Of course I understand not everybody lives within an hour and has that luxury.  That being said, there's no justification for me to buy preferred parking when I can hop right on a tram as soon as I arrive.  But I do see arriving later in the day how preferred parking would be a huge plus for some people.

@ howdo-burned out?? what is this concept? I have never heard of it before..... ;)

No my family wont buy the parking pass. We usually stay where there is a shuttle to and fro. My husband hates parking there and refuses to do it so we only stay where there is a shuttle. Even though Homestay Inn is amazing and affordable.....

I have never paid to park. I figure I will walk around a few miles during the course of a day, and have no problem walking from the closer lots (whatever lot C is called now!) and I also figure waiting in line for a tram is no big deal since I'll more than likely spend an hour waiting in line during the course of my day anyway!

I will save the money and apply it to my food and souvenirs!

My mom always pays to park because she thinks we will get in the park faster, but when I go and my mom isn't there, we park where ever. I don't see why I should have to pay to park when I'm gonna spend probably 3x that while I'm at SDC. They don't lose any money from my visits!
I don't like to wait for the trams/buses, so I walk from the parking lot to the gate. I'll be walking all day anyway, I see the walk before I get in as a warm up.

I will never get the pass. Just the availability of it will lengthen the line for preferred parking. I've always had a great experience with parking and its part of the SDC experience in my opinion.

I'm going to disagree with you Shave. I've paid for the preferred parking several times before and each time it seems we ended up farther and farther out and don't really think we saved much time. You might have a point about snaking thru the lots to find a spot, I suppose preferred could save a few minutes there but as far as from the time I lock my car to the time I'm going through the gate I have never found preferred to be a time saver. I've never had to wait more than a few minutes for a tram and usually preferred has me taking more footsteps than walking to a tram stop.

That being said, I am considering buying one and giving it a try. $18 for the whole year isn't much in the grand scheme of things and if I don't like I won't do it again in '13.

We never use the preferred parking.  Of course we always get there early and park right next to tram stop 2.  More times than not there is one if not more trams sitting there waiting to load.  We are at the front gate in no time.  I must say, our last few visits this fall have found the tram service to be very good.

Seems like everybody everywhere is trying to figure out ways to generate revenue. I wouldn't be surprised if SDC decides to someday start charging parking prices for all lots along with the shuttles. If they do, it would be interesting to track whether or not souvenir sales drop off. Where they might try to add revenue in one area might cost them in another. I know if I had to pay parking or shuttle my family would not spend the money we do in the park on drinks, peanuts and floats at the Saloon Show, etc. We also spend quite a bit of money on other souvenirs which we wouldn't do if they started charging for parking-there would go the money we've decided to spend on the Bears in the Holler each year. The last few years we haven't driven our vehicle to the park as we catch the shuttle from SDC and get dropped off at the front gate. This is a nice service SDC provides and we appreciate very much. It is has also allowed us to save fuel money that we spend at the park. Last year, the money we saved in fuel we used to eat the buffet at Molly Mills. While on the topic of SDC trying to generate revenue, I absolutely hate the trailblazer passes. To me, if somebody that comes to the park is in such a hurry that they can't spend quality time there, including waiting on the rides, SDC should not cater to them. In the long run it is us true fans that will spend more money over our extended stays rather than the person who comes for a quick afternoon. It's a slap in the face of the true supporters of the park when an outsider is allowed to purchase a pass to jump over me in line because they don't take the time to spend the full day in the park. Anyway, this is the reasoning I've heard for the passes. Maybe I'm just going off misinformation here which makes my whole argument void.

My family uses preferred parking whenever we can get it.  The season pass parking is only $6.00 and it is a life saver for us. Trying to corral 5 kids and a stroller on a shuttle is a pain.  Not to mention the wait time to go back to the lot when everyone is tired.  Preferred parking eliminates waits, and comes in handy when someone forgets something in the van and someone (usually me) has to walk back to get it.  For our family, its well worth it. I don't know if we will buy a sticker next year.  One possible problem is that occasionally preferred parking sells out.   It's happened to us twice.  That could be pretty frustrating for folks who buy a sticker but can't get in.

I'm with rube and tiffany on this one...
We always try to park in the old lot C, but even if we have to park on the other side of the street we still walk in.  We make it a game by picking a person at the end of the line when we walk by the tram stop and seeing if we can walk in before they get there.  Usually we beat them to the park.  You'd be surprised how long it takes to wait for the tram, wait for people to load strollers and then unload at the entrance...it's really not a long walk even from the far lots.  'Course I am married to a runner and she can cover that parking lot pretty quickly even at a walking pace.  The only time we ever used preferred parking was when my dad had a knee injury and had a tough time getting to the wheelchair rental.

We would not buy the parking pass......we always get to the park before opening and walk. The walk is a good way to loosen up before getting in.

Gotta appreciate your love for the trams....They are part of the park experience I have to stay....some of our funnest moments came on the trams to or from the park....What's better than the feeling of anticipation as you ride the tram to the front gate that first visit of the summer (at least that's when it happens for us)?

I agree! For my family, the tram ride is just part of the Silver Dollar City experience! Although during my last visit I encountered a couple of crotchety, old tram attendants that were yelling at people who were confused about where to go. That left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Either way, for FREE parking, and a FREE tram ride, I suppose I can mute them out, and just enjoy the breeze in my hair. :)

There were three incidents, and that was one of them yes. The parking lot is very confusing for any first time guest. Some areas of the parking lot have no obvious channels, or markers to follow, and the tram route looks very similar to any other route.

It's not just first time guests. I've done it almost every time I've left that lot and even right after we met someone on the tram and the driver warned us about it. The signage just plain sucks, it IS very confusing in the daylight and at night it's an absolute cluster $%!. One of the dumbest things I've seen them do.

Title: Re: Will YOU buy the Parking Pass for $18.00?
Post by: jmc75 on November 06, 2011, 10:23:51 PM
I went ahead and bought the parking pass for $18.00 to me that is not a bad deal since it is normally $6.00 to do season pass perferred. Also as I mentioned before they are only selling 1000 pass and that is it. I does mention on the pass that space is limited and first come first serve. This though is my rreason for the pass. Usually except for the last two years, we would alway park in lot C and take the green tram. A couple times if the trolley came along we would skip and wait for the tram. To me this is how you start your day at SDC. Well once they played with all the parking and got rid of the Green tram I had kinda decided it was alomost easier to park a little closer and walk ,especially when you have a stroller then trying to get it on the tram. Well now we have two kids and a double stroller which personally is pain to get it out of the car so trying to fold it just to get on the tram to me is not even worth the effort especially after a day at the park and all the item you have at the end of the day. Also the line to get on the tram when leaving the park at night sucks you have people shoving you out of the way to make it on first. So I just assume walk anyway. Now you may say well free parking is not that much further, well with two kids and with all day spent at the park that couple hundred feet is a big difference.

One time I was on a tram, and the conductor said "Low ceilings, watch yur heads!" As soon as he said that, I stood up to get off and hit my head REALLY hard. The conductor, of course, noticed and pointed it out to everybody. It was kinda embarassing, and I had a headache. What a wonderful way to start the day! It seems funny now, but not so much back then.
I've also done this on the train a few times...
Clumsy?

We paid for parking once or twice this year, but won't do it again. We walked farther from preferred parking than we would have if we had parked in a free lot and taken the tram! My husband though, depending on how far we are parked, just prefers to walk regardless, because we always have the stroller with tons of stuff in it, so instead of taking everything out, folding up the stroller, getting us and all our stuff on the tram, then doing it all in reverse when we get off the tram, he just walks and pushes the stroller with one kid and all our stuff, but I usually ride the tram with our other son and meet him! LOL!

Nope, I won't be buying a parking pass either!  Parking is usually not an issue since I have handicap plates, but in "pre-wheelchair days", I use to love to ride the green trams.  My husband was not happy riding the tram Friday.  All handicap lots were full, so we were told to pay $25 valet parking, or "find a spot in a parking lot."  He was allowed to drop me off at the gate, but it took him at least 45 min. to park and ride the tram back to the gate.  I don't ask for special favors, so it wasn't a big deal until after the 5k marathon Fri.  He had to push me 2/3 mile back to the truck after pushing me most of the 5k route.  That was one tired, sore husband the next day!  I asked him if he wished we would have paid the $25, and his response was "@#$* No!"  I do think that when the park is that busy, handicap parking should take precedence over valet parking.  As I waited for him, I saw quite a few elderly couples leave the park because they couldn't find handicap parking.

I'm with Parson.  When you have a stroller, preferred parking can be wonderful!  Last summer I met my cousin in the park, so I just had my kids by myself.  Not getting on the tram was nice.  I haven't experienced parking far away in preferred, but when I've parked there it was during the week in the summer, so maybe it wasn't as busy as the weekends.

I do understand "burnout."  The last couple of years in the park with my youngest haven't always been easy.  Sometimes, the thought of chasing my toddler in the park is not appealing.  We went this fall, though, and had a nice trip.  My parents were there, so I am sure that made it easier!

We are going in December.  My parents are coming again, so we will see how it goes.

It's interesting to read everyone's preference on the matter. For some, the free parking is very important, and for others, the pay to park is very important. As long as they don't start charging to ride the parking lot tram I'll be happy.  ;)

Just like the drive to SDC, the walk from the car never seems that far on the way IN...but just like the drive home...the walk back to the car always seems to take soo much longer! I've seen the lot full before too. I've also seen the "preferred parking" only about 50 feet away from free parking. As it fills up seems they just keep pushing it farther back.

Are these only being sold at the park? I didn't see an option to order it when I ordered our season passes the other night.

I wonder if they sold out.
The only thing I am not big on with the pass is that it is a sticker that gets put on your car. Well what if on occasion you take the other car. To me it should be tied to the pass holde kinda like at six flags. I am hoping that since this is the first year maybe they will tweak it next year.

Not to mention, the people parking just 50 feet away get a nice tram ride directly to the front gate. :P

It would be nice if they issued parking placards that hang from your review mirror. However, I suppose that would just encourage misuse. Figure out a way to simply leave the sticker attached to its non adhesive backing, and slip it in the front windshield, or something. ;D

Take a roll of scotch tape with you and make it look like the pass is stuck to your car!

I'm sorry... cheating's bad.  :P

The parking pass needs to be able to be moved between vehicles.

In our case, Depending on who is going with us, on which 1 of 3 vehicles we drive...

Maybe i can buy 1 or 2 extras on ebay next year!!!  LOL

If you're not down with the Scotch tape idea, you might try the Sticker Shield. It's a clear plastic backing that adheres to the windshield like a Post-It note. Put the sticker on the shield, then put the shield on your window. It's $5.49 (plus $2-3 shipping) for two of them: https://ssl.dwebsite.com/secure6/stickershield/order.html

I have mine on order, so I can't vouch for it personally yet. Will let you all know.

Where does the perfered parking pass put you? My wife is handicaped and rides a scooter and I never really understood why they put handicaped visitors in the A Lot before they open the bus area to handicapted parking  ( which still is not enough)

i havent seen the pass yet...

But how about laminated it and putting nylon string or small bead chain on it,  then hang it from mirror while in the park?

Better off would be a mirror hanger, like the handicap cards that people use..

Talked to one of the parking guys today he also said they were sold out. I guessnothig really changes by what he said you still go through the same line I think you just get waved thru quicker. I was kinda hoping to bypass the line.I figure this is the first year so there will be some tweaking a little as the year goes on.

When I was in grad school, I hated having to stick the parking lot sticker on my bumper, so I stuck it on a magnet and stuck the magnet to the bumper.  Naturally, the magnet was stolen (along with the sticker).

Just something to keep in mind when thinking about affixing the sticker that goes with this pass.

No. I have no intention of ever buying a pass to park on the lots at the park. Free parking and a tram ride or walk is fine.

While boarding the tram with the toddler, 2 bags, and a stroller, I wish we had parked in preferred.  But we made it.  If I hadn't had my older DD or DH with me, I would've parked in preferred since they were parking down in the valley at Stop 3.  It is hard to juggle the stroller on those metal seats of the tram.  The white seats are a little easier.  The bus is not easy either.  I try not to hit everyone in the head with my child when I get on a bus.   :)

It would make sense that a family with little ones, and all of their accessories could benefit from preferred parking. Those trams, and especially the buses have just enough room on them for each person. Once you add in all of the extras that come with little ones, it does seem to be an extra inconvenience. However, it is an inconvenience that is free. Tough decision! :)
Title: Re: Will YOU buy the Parking Pass for $18.00?
Post by: jmc75 on March 24, 2012, 12:19:35 PM
That was my main reason , with using a double stroller it is a lot easier to walk then try to fold it up and put it on a tram. Also somedays when you leave the park the line for the trams is very long. Also when you have two tired kids the 100 yards or so make a big difference when walking. So for $18.00 and we are usaully at SDC at least a 6 times a years the cost is not that big of a deal.

yes they actually sold out very quickly I would say within a day or two of when you could get your season pass.
I was just curious if any of the people on here did get one if they had been to the park yet. I bought one and will be there next Friday and i believe you actually pickup the sticker then.

I think riding the tram into the city is park of the charm of the city itself, so I don't think I'll ever buy a parking pass. I tried the $6 paid parking but I just didn't like it as well

I'm paying 72 dollars a year now. 6 dollars a day. at least 6 visits a year. 2 days each visit. yep, I'd buy a parking pass in a heart beat. Besides i haven't had much luck with the shuttles. people can get real ugly if they think you took their seats.

Well, it's good have a variety even if it comes at a price. However, this seems to be a win-win for both Silver Dollar City, and the customers who elect to pay for it.

So went to the park Last Friday and was going to get my parking pass that i paid for, couple things I found out. First they have to stick the sticker on the car you want. We actually had my father in law's car and normally we do not take his so they did not give me the sticker though he was nice enough to let us park with out paying. I plan to email SDC and ask again why the sticker has to be associated with a certain car and why it can not be associated with your season pass. I would doubt you would by a parking pass without a season pass and its not like you would go park and then run and get into someone else car.  Hopefully this is changed for next year assuming they do it again.

Interesting feedback!

It actually doesn't make much sense to be given a permanent sticker for your car. People change cars, crash cars, switch cars, and trade cars all of the time. All they need to do is issue a Parking Pass card similar to Season Pass ticket. That way it will always with the person who purchased the pass, and not on their car.

as far as the pass goes, we had discussed it already, it should be a simple placard you hang from the mirror. :P

Last fall I posted about trying the Sticker Shield. It's a clear plastic backing that is *supposed* to adhere to the inside of the windshield like a Post-It note. You'd put the sticker on the shield, then put the shield on your window.

Well, I finally used it with my new parking sticker when I visited last weekend, and I don't recommend the Shield. I thought it would peel on and off the inside of the windshield easily, but it was stuck hard to the glass after only a few hours. I'll have to scrape the Shield off and then it won't re-adhere.

Sanddunerider's suggestion for laminating the sticker and hanging it from your rearview mirror is a great idea.

The Shield also caused a little issue with the parking lot attendant. He was confused when I declined to let him put the sticker directly onto the windshield, then annoyed, then downright rude. I literally had to block him (twice!) from reaching in and slapping the sticker directly onto the glass, even after explaining the Shield to him. SDC really needs to go with a 'hanger' pass instead of a sticker, if only to keep the peace.

Is this like a static cling kinda sticker? Or a not so Sticky kinda sticker? Or a full blown gorilla glue adhesive sticker? I have one from my school that is inbetween a static cling and not so sticky kind. It doesnt bother me at all. Easy on Easy off Easy on. The citizen who got all rude didnt need to be that way. Would it hurt just to put it on dash board and then slip it in glove box when not in use??

Out of curiosity when the attendant put on your sticker did he write down the vehicle you were driving.
Ozarkbred how was the second time you went with the pass did they just wave you through or did you have to stop to get any numbers.

Slightly off topic, however I have had a couple of rude encounters with parking attendants last year. I sure hope this isn't the new trend. Back on topic, I agree that they need a better way to identify cars that can park in the preferred lot. I am sure they are concerned about fraud, or people letting everyone, including their monkey's uncle barrow a single pass, but a simple check to make sure the parking lot card holder is present in the vehicle would remedy that. This situation with permanent decals, or stickers, or whatever else is a bit silly.

I sometimes pay to park however each time I have I become very irritated at the speed the line to pay moves at.
Seems to me like all other parks have more than one attendant, selling those spots at $6 being the bottom they could load up with 4 workers for the first 3 hours and then cut back to 1.  I have always felt that I am in my free spot and on the tram 3/4 way to the park if not possibly even in the gate before I would even be parked if I am going the premium route.
This is something that they really need to work on.

Ozark, they could do the parking pass just like the BAF's..  they would have your card number on them.....
AND if they wanted to get fancy........
they could use a prtable scanning divice to scan  the barcode of your season pass & scan the barcode of the parking pass to make sure they match!
Title: Re: Will YOU buy the Parking Pass for $18.00?

Absolutely! The technology is there. All they would have to do is digitally add a parking pass to your account, and then the parking attendant could simply swipe your season pass to verify it. Problem solved. Plus, they woudn't have to waste money printing stickers. It is a win-win for everyone! ;D
