Title: First thing to do
Post by: Gift Shop Gal on March 02, 2012, 06:29:31 PM
What is the very first thing you will do on your first visit back to SDC?

If we go by ourselves, we will check out the Hospitality House & then maybe some glass blowing.
If we go with Big Doin's & Good fixin's, ( my brother in law & his girlfriend ) we will go ride the Giant Swing first because she has never riden it.

Anyone else?

After going through the turnstiles the first thing I always do is get a cinnamon roll from Eve and Delilah's Bakery. It is a family tradition. It is also tradition for me to get a funnel cake just before leaving the park on the last day of my visit. :)

Use my "smellavision" and head to Eva and Delilah's.  After that, I don't care what I do - I just want to be there.

Cinnamon bread from Sullivan's Mill -- to me it's so much better than the cinnamon rolls at Eva and Delilah's! ;D

Perhaps Sullivan's Mill is better, but Eva and Delilah's Bakery is right there at the entrance. The smell, and the aroma just holds me captive each time I pass by. Plus, I cannot get to Sullivan's Mill until after the rope drop, and I need that energy boost before I start my day tackling those steep hills. ;D

Has anyone ever tried to recreate some of these SDC treats?  We should start a page dedicated "Make at Home" versions of SDC food.  I'm not sure about the breads at Sullivans Mill or E&D's Bakery, but I am pretty sure that the first ingredient of the skillets is "One Gallon Bucket of Lard, melted in a huge skilled until just beginning to smoke."

My mother-in-law has gotten very good at making what she now calls "Branson Skillet." It is pretty darn close to what you get at SDC (the sausage skillet, not for sure what it is called) and is very delicious.

I've tried making one of those skillets, also.  I had the ingredients right, but I couldn't get the seasoning perfect - close but still needs work.

You can go to Sullivan's Mill before the rope drop -- there is a passageway that is open off the square to the left of the blacksmith shop.  Have been there many times before the rope drop.

Well, at least we all have our priorities straight. First order of business, breakfast! :D Just like the old days. Besides a Silver Dollar City breakfast always beats a cheap motel continental breakfast.

The more I think about it the more I dont want the recipes from SDC. Because its not the bread alone that tastes fantastic. Its the bread with the people in the ozarks and the anticipation of rope drop. Its the skillet meal in the styrofoam bowl with the 5 ft skillet and the noise of happy guests. The ambiance that goes with eating the amazing food. I believe it would not taste the same should I make it at home even if I had the right ingredients. When ya make it at home its just dinner at home. The special sparkle is gone.

I have to confess, I've never been there nearly early enough for breakfast or the rope drop. Maybe when I was a kid, if they did that back then, but even then I think we always had breakfast at the camper or cabin (being cheap sorts), then arrived mid-morning.

We have always done "after 3, next day free". Even the year we bought season passes the timing didn't work out to use our BAFs for all the kids (let me tell ya, I seriously crunched some numbers that year to find the best bargain!)

Don't get me wrong, I'd buy the whole family season passes, plus a condo, if I had the money. I'd love to spend a full 5-7 days carefully exploring the parts of the City that have always been a blur. But life is life, and it takes some very careful planning to get in even one trip to the City and still pay the bills.

Food prices have gotten so high, and portions smaller, so we won't be eating there as often, as well.  It used to be that we could purchase one skillet dinner and share, but not so much any longer.  And those frozen lemonades?  Yikes!  I think we'll be making one at home once we leave the park and carry around water bottles.  But, that cinnamon bread is a must have!

If the first trip is with the kiddos, we have to measure first. And on the way I will once again wish the measuring station was more central. Anyway the youngest will be very close to TNT height.

If the first trip is without them, I honestly have no idea. I can't remember what we did when adults made all the choices.

It's neat to see how other people time their day at Silver Dollar City. For me, attending the opening ceremonies, and the rope drop is an absolute must. Yet when I leave in the afternoon, I still see dozens of people at the front entrance who are just starting their day there. I am sure the "come after three, and the next day is free" has a lot to do with it. However, it is still fascinating.

Same thing I always do. Walk into the Apple Butter Shop. No matter if I arrive at 11:00 or 9:30, it is always the first place we go into. It was the same way when it was located down by The Plunge. We would walk slowly, just take it in and go in for a smell of turnovers (or the remaining scent of what was once turnovers!) and just meander our way through the city. First real thing this time will be figuring out our clearance with the stroller since that is a whole new ballgame for us!

I am surprised to see how many people (including myself) who choose to use their sense of taste as their first real indulgence at Silver Dollar City. There is just something about those sweet, mouth watery delights that sooth the soul. Of course, after I eat that gigantic cinnamon roll I must race down, and up the hill to PowderKeg. :-X :P

The dreaded stroller/tram combo!! Ugh. Good luck. This year I am renting one at a cool 13.00 a freakin day. My kid is too big for the umbrella variety and way too big for the fold up kind yet too small to hoof it all day.

Gotta admit, Salsa is a bit odd at 10am unless it is served with eggs and tortillas!

Not saying that stops me, but it is still odd!

Pintrader, after my routine stop at Delilah's, I amble over to see if Danny Eaken is sitting on the porch, and I head for the Apple Butter shop.  No wonder I am never hungry when I leave the park (no matter what time I leave).

Not odd at all. True salsa fans appreciate the chopped tomatoes, and spices anytime of the day! Also, I never thought about stopping at the Apple Butter Shop first thing in the morning. Now I wonder what I'm missing! :P

The secret to strollers is preferred parking. 6.00 and a short walk is the way to go!
Especially when I had a double jogging stroller.

I am a bit nervous about this summer because I feel like we shouldn't take a stroller, but at the same time if the youngest falls asleep or is worn down, I dont know if  I can carry him out! That's the pitfalls of being 3.5 and the same size as 5 year olds!

rent the double stroller at the park. it is 16.00 but VERY convenient. I dont like that there are no cup holders on it though.

Preferred parking is the way to go if you  have strollers/small children.  The price for preferred parking is cheaper than renting a stroller (if you have a Season Pass). It is great at the end of the day if you have crabby children and long lines for the trams. It also works well if you have to make trips back to the vehicle to drop things off or retrieve forgotten items.

I have 5 kids ages 3-15.  Until I don't have to fool with backpacks full of snacks and changes of clothes, and strollers, Preferred Parking is worth it to me.

I'll bet that almost everybody uses their sense of smell first. As soon as you get out of the HH and under the arbor, you can close your eyes, plug your ears, shut your mouth, and just breathe... and you're home!

For my hubby it's Sullivan's Mill for the cinnamon bread then on to Brown's Candy Factory to get a free sample of whatever they're making that day. Truth be told we make several tracks a day through there. lol Then it's on to the taffy shop for him.

Depending on my health it's either straight to Wildfire or wandering the streets taking it all in. We go in and out of shops, stop to listen to music or story tellers. For us SDC is magical.

Someone on here said they'd love to be able to spend the night in The City.....we have had that same discussion many times. It's probably not feasible and that's why they build the cabins at the Wilderness Campground. At least we have a chance at the feeling.

First thing to do is have breakfast at the Mill...Then just enjoy the sites, sounds and smells that are everywhere in the park.. We dont get in too big of hurry for the rides anymore, but our teenager does and she loves to ride them all. Hit the shops, see the demonstrations and people watch over a snack in the afternoon..
