Title: Nostalgic and Favorite Television Shows
Post by: Andymeets1880s on July 14, 2010, 11:52:40 PM
It seems I have found mutual Red Green and Andy Griffith fans on here and was wondering if any of you were "King of the Hill" fans? The animated show with Hank Hill, his wife, Peggy and son, Bobby in Arlen, Texas. I watch it at 9 and 9:30 pm on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network and then our local channel in KC, Channel 4, shows two episodes at 12:30a.m. and 1a.m.

Just thought I'd ask, I tell ya' what. Maybe next thread can be about propane and propane accessories. LOL!

I like King of the Hill, as well as Family Guy. King of the Hill was something a nephew turned me on to. Saw it one time and was hooked. Family Guy gets pretty crude at times, but I love the way the show drops in those "pop" references and shocks me. Many fans of these shows will also be Simpsons fans...but for some reason the Simpsons never hooked me. I seldom watch it.

I love King of the Hill. I'm not a fan of The Simpsons or Family Guy though. Just never got into it.

Haha! I love King of the Hill and Family Guy. The best eps are always when they get special guest stars, like on King of the Hill when Alan Rickman played the king at the RenFest in one ep and Johnny Depp played the yoga instructor in another.

I like South Park, too, but they rarely, if ever, get actual celebrities to do voices for their SP versions.

Whoa! Pretty good response so far. Kinda wondered if KOTH would go over much. Tom Petty as "Lucky" was a pretty good move. His voice was perfect for the character!

Mmm hmm, Mmm hmm, Mmm hmm, Yup. Kinda wish you could have a beer with them in the alley, dontcha,  except for Dale's blabbering about aliens!

I like Family Guy too, but some of the jokes about God and Jesus make me a little uncomfortable. There is a line of pushing things a little too far and Seth Macfarlane just destroyed it!

I loved "Johnny Quest" as a kid, but the sterotypical Indian kid would not fly today. I imagine some dog lovers society would protest that "Bandit" was put into too many threatening situtions!

Speed Racer was always my #1. Speed Buggy was cool too. ::)

Ha, Ha! Speed Racer was one of my favs too, Ha Ha, Ahhhhhhhh (some of you will probably get the "Ha, Ha's" and some of you probably wont)

And, as a kid, I found that there was no need to fear because Underdog was always here!!!

Ok...let's really kick in the time machine door! How about H.R. Pufnstuf and Sigmund and the Sea Monsters!!!!

Yeah, Andy...you are from my generation. How about Rocky and Bullwinkle? The Bugs Bunny Show? Tennessee Tuxedo, Jetson's, Flintstones, and as long as I'm going here are some of the old regular TV series that were fab for me as a kid...Gilligan's Island, Leave it to Beaver, Munsters, Addams Family, and the #1: Andy Griffith Show!!!

I have one show that I thought was hilarious and was written brilliantly but I can never find anyone to agree with me. And that was "Green Acres." The speed at which they could all deliver their lines as fast as they did and the confusion it caused. Most everyone I have said Green Acres to has said they thought it was one of the dumbest or lamebrained ideas. If you listen to how fast Oliver Douglas would get interrupted and the other cast members would deliver their lines so quick to keep that continuity going. Some of the antics and humor was so far out that it really would take some time to come up with the ideas and be able to bounce around the dialogue so quick!

I agree...Green Acres was part of Paul Hennings list of great shows in the 60s...Pettycoat Junction and Beverly Hillbillies. He was a hard working, talented man.

I concur, as well.  Green Acres may have, in fact be the best of the three.  It was silly because it was supposed to be silly.  Who can say they didn't like the characters in GA?  Mr. Haney, Eb, Ralph and Alf, and the Ziffels.  Mr. Drucker was clearly a better character in this show than in Petticoat Junction.  I would campaign the most for Hank Kimbel to be voted the funniest of all of them.  Alvy Moore revived the character in an episode of Moonlighting, and when he appeared in character, I nearly fell out of my chair.

I wonder how many takes they had to do sometimes. The way they would go back and forth so fast was great timing, but surely they stepped on each other or got tongue tied. I bet Eddie Albert holds the actors record for most lines never finished on television!

My all time fav sitcoms are Andy Griffith Show, I Love Lucy, M*A*S*H, All In The Family, and Roseanne (in the first few years)

Honorable mention for writing to Three's Company. Although it was kinda cheesy and immature, I still cant figure out how a sitcom can run so many years and come up with infinite ways to have characters overhear or misunderstand what they thought was sex.

Andy: was a great moral show and made you feel like SDC does.
All In the Family: could have you on the floor one minute and then drop dead serious the next.
Lucy and Desi: were pioneers. Period.
M*A*S*H: dialogue was masterful.
Roseanne: went through everything we go through as everyday joes

I'm drawn to Hogan's Heroes as one of the most creative situation comedies about something that's not funny at all.  The German characters, by the way, were mostly Jewish actors from areas around Austria, and insisted that they would play the parts if the Germans were presented as incompetent.  Who would have thought life in a POW camp, and sneaking out to kill Nazis, could be so funny.  Irreverent, but funny.

I agree Andy about Family Guy...it can be a bit blasphemous and I have issues with that. King Of The Hill is funny, I am a Simpsons fan though. I was never a South Park fan, too crude.

I am a child of syndication-Gilligan's Island, Munsters, Brady Bunch, Monkees, Andy Griffith, Little House on the Prarie, I Dream of Jeannie,Laverne and SHirley, Mork and Mindy, THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, and any other show that was on repeats during the mid 80's.

I love sitcoms!!! But I'm into the newer stuff. King of Queens, Everybody Loves Raymond, According to Jim, etc. I could watch sitcoms all day.

I had a chance to interview Eb from Green Acres in the early 90's when I was in radio. A very nice, committed Christian fellow. He told me he was in the early stages of putting together a movie about a talking pig like Arnold from Green Acres. I wished him well on the project, but thought he was nuts. Well, a few years later the movie "Gordy" came out, and Eb was in it...that was the movie he was talking about. James Cromwell won an Academy Award with that film. Guess ole Eb knew better than me on what would make it in Hollyweird.

I'm going to go out on a limb here. I'm putting my manhood on the line. I'm going to admit that one of my all time favorite shows ever is....the "Mary Tyler Moore" show. I loved the show. I loved the actors. I loved the sets. I loved that Mary drove a mustang. I loved Mary. And I LOVED the theme song, "Love is all around" by Sonny Curtis. There. I admit it. Now I'm gonna go work on a chainsaw or something.

Tony...love MTM as well! Every one of those cast members went on to star in their own shows. Tells  you something about the quality of that show.
Ok...now I'm going out to work on my truck.

You've got spunk Tony

I hate spunk

does that answer any questions? Chuckles bites the dust had to be one of the funniest episodes on TV I had seen up to that date. As a child I was watching the funeral portion, and the comedy caught me off guard. Itwas not a sad thing....it was FUNNY. It shattered my thoughts of a funeral forever!

Here's another classic tv episode.... Sammy Davis Jr. visits Archie Bunker. That held, and may still hold, the longest audience laugh in tv history.

I was lucky enough to work at the Hee Haw Theater in Branson from 1981-1983. Got to meet over a dozen of the stars of the TV show. Hee Haw was where Mickey Gilley Theater is now. My boss was a writer for the TV show...his name is Tom Lutz. Nice guy to work for, and I enjoyed my time at the theater. Hee Haw was one of those shows that I had to watch every weekend. I remember in 1981 Roy Clark and the whole Hee Haw gang saluted the Hee Haw Theater, Branson, Missouri, population 1,000 seats!

That show was fun indeed. We saw an episode in our hotel room in Branson just a few weeks ago that featured "Miss Kitty" from Gunsmoke. I didn't even know she could sing. I loved those old sets and backgrounds from that show. Simpler times.

Junior Samples!  Ha!  Larry the Cable guy owes Junior his entire career.   ;)

I love Hee-Haw too!  As a kid not so much because I grew up in Missouri and thought I was too civilized for such a thing, but now I see the true humor in it.  Also, once I found out that my grandpa served in the same regiment that Grandpa Jones did, I had new respect for the show.

As an adult, besides the humor of it, I just love looking at the color saturation of those sets.  Oh my goodness!!!!!

When I was a kid, I would sometimes go up to my Grandma when we were eating at their house and ask loudly "Hey Grandma, what's for supper?!"  LOL!!

Title: Re: Nostalgic and Favorite Television Shows
Post by: Junior on July 26, 2010, 08:13:20 AM
Funny you mention the "Hey grandpa, what's for supper thing..." When Grandpa Jones appeared at the theater in Branson in winter of 1981, it was one of the first attempts at off season shows in Branson. He appeared in November. Out of 1,000 seats, only about 30 were filled at the three or so performances he made. Nobody was in town, even the locals didn't come out for the show. It's too bad, 'cause Grandpa was great....in every show, a heckler in the crowd would shout the what's for supper line, and Grandpa would completely stop what he was doing, and run down a menu. Each time it was different, and each time it was funny. The audience loved it, and he got a big laugh.

I was 19 years old at the time...and rather intimidated at meeting and talking to the stars from the TV show. When George "Goober" Lindsey spent a week with us in 1981, I could not believe he was standing in front of me, as I had just come from home where, on my day off, had watched the Andy Griffith Show three times that day on different local channels! I come to work, and GOOBER is standing in front of me, asking me for a Coke from the concession! Surreal, to say the least.

I remember that Kenny Price brought his whole family with him to Branson, and I met his daughter, Jennifer, who was about my age. I tried, unsuccessfully, to pick her up, and ask her out for a date. She was gentle with me, she let me down easy, and we never went out, but I tried. She was darn good looking, too.

aaaahhh-OOOO-gah!

Yeah, I remember the young Ms. Price. Not until you reminded me, but yeah. Right there with you. ;-)

Kenny Price did a great show. Aside from his singing, he was a great comic. I remember him delivering what was probably the most risqué line ever uttered at a Branson show in that era: "When I was born, I weighed 19 pounds. It took my mother six months to get over it. Of course, Dad said she never did really get over it... "

;D

Speaking of the Hee Haw show in Branson...one night I took off to hang out with some friends and when I came back the next night everybody was talking about how Leslie Neilson from the movie Airplane! had stopped by to visit our boss...they knew each other from Hollywood. Airplane! was a huge hit around that time, and of course Leslie would go on to do the Police Squad movies...we did have a "wall of fame" backstage that all the stars and cast and crew signed, and he signed our wall. Man, I was sorry to have missed him...everyone said he was really a great guy. He watched the show from our "green room" backstage, and I think he popped out to wave to the crowd.

Anyone interested in the Hee Haw Theater in Branson can learn more by reading an article I wrote for the August, 2010 issue of Life in the Ozarks Magazine, which is based in Shirley, Arkansas. Included a few pictures, too. Also new to the site is a story about SDC's Terry Sanders. Here's a link to my Flickr site:
