How does the con get the great task of open and closing the train gate?

Is he one of the escapees, and has he just assumed that new role in an attempt to "fit in"?

Is there a sniper-guard up on the WB tower watching him while he performs this service?

Inquiring minds want to know!

Last time I was on park in August...I asked the same question. The con at the railroad gate behind the mine told me he was a trustee. Having been a convict at the flooded mine one time myself (1980-81) I believed him!  ;)
"Howdy there folks! My name is Junior Dugan, and I'll be drivin' your diving bell!"

This has the potential of being one of the most fun jobs in the park.  I'd think you could come up with lots of great one liners and responses to questions.  I realize this is a safety position, but the person could become a pretty good (and memorable) character.

They dress a "prisoner" in something that looks like a manquien (sp?)- something like Terry as the scarecrow. He/she could "come to life" as people come up to the crossing.  The scarecrow bit is always a crowd pleaser.  :D

I asked the convict at the gate what he was in for.  "Cattle rustling."

"Really?" I asked.

He said, "Yep, but it was a bum steer."

I asked a female convict loading the boats in the mine what she was in for.  She said, "Shooting people," and promply shot me with water from a squirt bottle.
