I've got a small DVD collection of films made in or about Ozarks subjects. Where the Red Fern Grows, War Eagle Arkansas, Frank and Jesse, Winters Bone, and a few others like the old Shepherd of the Hills movie made by KYTV in Springfield, MO in the early, early, 60s. Does anyone else collect films on the same subject? There really is alot of good stuff out there, and it can often be found in the bargain bins at Wal-Mart or other stores.

I often check Netflix for movies made in the Ozarks. Sometime you can find a few on there. I saw Winters Bone, Frank and Jesse, Foxfire Light all on Netflix, and I own Where the Red Fern Grows and I inherited a tape of Shepherd of the Hills from my grandpa.

I have to laugh every time I see the John Wayne version of Shepherd of the Hills (don't even get me started on how much I hate that movie) because they so obviously filmed in the Sierras. The ecology of the setting is SO un-Ozarkian.

I can't even watch it! 

The first time I saw it, was when I stumbled across it back in the days of VHS rentals, and I was super excited. You can imagine my disappointment. Not just the scenery (did the 1969 "True Grit" look like Oklahoma?), but because the story was stood on its head and the characters were completely wrong.

Don't forget, quite a bit of the CBS miniseries "The Blue and the Gray" was shot in the Ozarks.  I was even in that one.

Did you mention Ozarks Legacy and Legend? Well I guess that one was pretty obvious though huh?

From 1970 -- "Bloody Mama" with Shelly Winters and Robert DeNiro was shot near Mountain Home, Yellville, and Little Rock.  Some of "Bootleggers" was also filmed in the Ozarks -- another 70s movie.  "Pass the Ammo" from the 80s was filmed in Eureka Springs.

According to an article I read years ago in the Mountain Home newspaper, the "Bloody Mama" cast and crew were filming a scene inside the old Cowdrey mansion in Yellville when the elderly homeowner heard them cussing. She threw them out of her house, and if I remember correctly she aimed her shotgun at them for emphasis.

I think they learned something about Ozark customs and Ozark women that day.

The house is now the Red Raven Inn, and it's lovely.

Was Frank and Jesse filmed in the 90's, I remember Randy Travis Clothed and soder at the time) and some other celebs taking in basketball games at BWA while filming something. Joey Lauren Adams(Chasing Amy, Big Daddy) filmed a movie of her own in Little Rock but that's not the Ozarks.

Frank and Jesse was filmed in the 90's. One of my favorite movies about my favorite outlaw!

Some scenes from Frank and Jesse were shot at War Eagle Cavern near Rogers, AR, and on the Eureka Springs Scenic Railway.
