My family and I were there this week and saw a sign at the post office that stated "due to circumstances beyond our control the Post office will close down in mid October."  No post master on duty at the time and checkout girl was busy.  Anyone know why and /or what "circumstances?"

Welcome to the site!  Not sure why they did this- may have something to do with government shutdown

Welcome Iron Mountain, glad to have you onboard.  As far as the Post Office.  Well there has been talks about post offices recently. Seems the Post Office just isnt supporting itself lately. (Dont I know that feeling)?  The wonderful age of electronics is simply killing the printing industry, including bulk mailings.  There has been talks about shuuting down some branches, maybe going to 3 day mail delivery, ETC.   I dont know if this is whats going on at the SDC branch. I might be the Govt. shutdown, it may be something completely unrelated.  But my guess would be the financial crisis of the Govt.

I wonder how many casual Silver Dollar City visitors even know there is a working Post Office there? It might be one of those original attractions that seems to be pushed off to the side. If it does close, I am sure it is probably money related like most things, or as mentioned the government shutdown.

I don't know if it's related, but Jerry that performed the duties passed away this past year...  :'(
By the way, it closes on the 18th.  I'm planning on mailing a few things, simply for the postmark...

USPS doesn't (technically) operate off of appropriated funds, so they're not directly affected by the shutdown.

If the SDC PO was staffed by a postal employee, even a contracted employee, then it would be subject to the same kinds of closures going on around the country. (There's not a single post office in Texarkana, either side, that is open on Saturday, for instance.)

There are still "contract postal offices" in rural America. That's what the SDC post office would have been back in the day, and should still be today, which would let it stay open because it would be staffed by store employees and not postal workers.

I hope they reopen the post office. It would be yet another thing I remember from my youth that is going away. Do we need to expand operation "squeeky Wheel?" or is this a government thing?
