Mandolin.  (I worked part time at FM in 1980-81 & 82.)

Definitely the Mandolin. It doesn't have that resonating metal twang that the Banjo has. I don't know how to describe it in musical terms, but I own a banjo, and am familiar with its sound.

The song has a very short string sound to it.

Looks like I need to listen to that YouTube video of FM a little closer. Sure sounded like a banjo on the video. And I cant remember it from my visit three years ago. ::)

Definitely a tenor banjo, which has a very short sustain, and none of the metallic ring of a 5 string banjo. It has the very "plucky" sound of a stretched drumhead, and it's 2-4 strings strummed at once.

I think banjo as well.  It doesn't really have that double string sound of a mandolin.

I suppose it could be a period banjo, which shares few qualities with mondern ones.

Ah, yes the great debate continues! Since no one here was around during the recording it is hard to say what was used without some type of solid evidence.

However, the different thoughts, and opinions are great!
