OK went to coaster Christmas and got free tickets to schltterban so off to Kansas City we go this summer.Does anybody know a good place to stay? We are not familiar with the area good and bad parts of town.I know Swoosh goes there maybe he could chime in?

Stay away from the motels near the stadiums and the Red Roof near WOF.
Westgate is a dangerous area as is the Plaza and Crown Center areas after dark.

The motels around Oak Park Mall and Independence Center are all right.  The motels in the Zona Rosa area would be fine as well (and not that far from Schlitterbahn).

There really isn't too many rooms out by Schlitterbahn except Great Wolf Lodge.

Any of the Marriott owned motels in the metro area will be fine.

Hope that helps.  IF you have any other questions you just PM me.

I really liked the Holiday Inn Express my mom and I stayed at just after Christmas; it's on the east side of Legends - we were able to walk there from the hotel.

I'm shocked there's not more lodging in that  out in the racetrack area.

Considering my time in memphis, I guess we have different views on what's bad and what isn't. The Crown Center is no different than staying in and around the Peabody and Beale St. in my experiences.

Swoosh

Yeah, you can pretty much just circle all of Memphis and call it bad

No, not really.

Read your OP above to see why this is the case.

Wolfchase and Germantown are OK, I felt relatively safe on Beale and when I visited the Pyramid for concerts in the day. We rode Amtrak and left our vehicle on their parking lot for a weekend, and I admit I was concerned about that, but the boys in the hood don't normally go onto US Government property to stir up anything or get into mischief, so when we got back the vehicle was fine. Besides, the Amtrak people are there 24/7. The Memphis Zoo, Pink Palace and old fairgrounds next to former Libertyland and the Liberty Bowl were all OK. Got to admit, have not been to Memphis in about 10 years, so I don't really know how things have changed. I know this, stay off Crump Ave. If you go down there, wear an extra Depends, have a well maintained vehicle and plenty of fuel. Oh yeah, don't make eye contact and get down the road as fast as possible.

I stayed several times at the comfort suites close to the legends. Lots of family's and felt very safe. I even ran around the neighborhoods on a morning jog in the mornings.

They have the Wilderness Campground thats across the valley. With a shuttle. And a general store. And a pool. And a playground or two. And clean bathrooms. And cabins. I heart that place!
The smell of asphalt and butane says home!

It's also not cheap and requires two night stays for the weekend. Maybe a spur to the Silver Dollar City train line should be ran ;D
