My son has been furloughed since the beginning and still has to work. If people are working without pay, it doesn't make sense to me that the pres is allowed to continue to travel outside the White House. Security has been beefed up, so not only are the agents being forced to work, they're being flown to DC for extra protection, it's costing taxpayers billions. Why can't be stay in the White House and feel the pain like others?  Stupid things are happening, also. Illinois Rivers have been shut down for duck hunting and fishing.  They falls  under the U. S. Fish & Wildlife, but funding for them isn't federal. It's a separate entity. It's called Pittman-Roberts and Dingle-Johnson funds.  Sportsman pay an extra tax on equipment. Guns ammo bows fishing gear. It's a 15% extra that goes into these funds. PR is wildlife and DJ is fishing.

I hope this jumps up and bites the ones responsible right on his butt. Do whatever you can to make it as painful to the American people as you can, right, Mr President?

They are going after folks they deem more likely to be conservative in a lot of this. Don't forget about the funding via the federal duck stamp.

As to healthcare and OKC. I found this interesting and know a group of doctors here locally that are entertaining the idea of a clinic of primary care and specialists that takes no insurance but is membership driven.

Sorry, but our President has nothing to do with this shutdown. You can blame Congress for it.

Sooner or later you got to pay your bills. Some folks think we need to start now

You think you should be able to buy a 20oz coke, twinkies, and doritos with food stamps.? I don't.

Yet this gov't has spent money marketing the fact that they have expanded the program

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV)- An Arkansas food stamp recipient says her debit card was shut down when she went to buy groceries Saturday at Wal Mart.

"It's pretty embarrassing to have groceries of all things, and having your kids in your basket and them saying that you can't get your things," says Malone. The single mother of two receives $526 in food stamps on the 12th of each month but this month the money was never deposited. "I got back to the house, I called the number of the card and I actually reached a person and was told that they're not showing any kind of sanctions or anything on the card, the money's just not there."

Malone and thousands of other food stamp recipients around the country reported similar issues on Saturday, when a power outage at an EBT service provider caused a glitch in the debit card system. But a DHS spokesman tells THV Arkansas uses a different service provider than other states, and Malone's issue is not related to the others. THV called several grocery stores in Little Rock and none reported issues with the debit cards. "Government assistance is nothing to be ashamed of. We all pay for it with every paycheck we get and I think it's fair we get our food," Malone added.

Uh, no you don't. I'm willing to bet she pays no fed income tax after she gets her return. This is the very definition of entitlement.

at least they could have got the 2 liters for less instead of the 20oz bottles. ::)

How bout the article in the San Fran paper suggesting folks make less to qualify for health care subsidies.

Jeez, this country is almost beyond screwed.

I am actually now a recipient of food stamps, and from my experience, as long as you have used the bulk of your allotted amount to buy real sustenance, I don't think there's anything wrong with buying a bit of "happy food" at the end of the month if you have some left over money before the next month's money comes in.

I am 28, unemployed, uninsured, and by the middle of next month, I will have to start paying, somehow, on the student loans that got me through the past four years of college to get me a Bachelor's Degree that apparently doesn't do much to get a job, since I've not received a single call back on any of the applications I've sent out for jobs since I moved back to Kansas City. I am also suffering from cold urticaria (which is an extra pain now that the weather is turning cold), severe depression (and currently un-medicated because I ran out and can't afford to get more and am having to wait two-plus weeks for my free doctor's visit at the local low-income health center), and suspect that I have Asperger's (I don't have an official diagnosis because I haven't been able to afford to go get tested), the characteristics of which are a big reason I have a terrible work history because I deal with major social anxieties, among other things.

So, sure, there are people who abuse the system, but that's always gonna be the case. Thing is, the majority of those who are being supported are being supported because they have good reason to be. Try to tell me that I should not be able to get medicine for my depression or food for my stomach.

Joy, you are in a tough spot. We most all have been. At 27 I was fighting cancer. I still don't think it's the responsibility of the tax payer to provide happy food. They certainly didn't provide it for myGrandparents during the depression yet they endured survived and prospered.

When I was 18, I went to work for my Grandfather in his store while I worked and paid my way through college without taking out student loans. There I was introduced to mothers sending in their kids with 1 dollar food stamps, they would buy a 5 cent piece of laffy taffy and get 95 cents back, after her kids did this about four times she would walk in buy a 40 of Olde English and a pack of Kools. Mother after mother would do this. It changed my world view quickly as a child of a single mother that worked her but off at Fed Ex but yet I didn't qualify for pell grants yet black kids of single mothers at Fed Ex did. Black kids that went to the same high school and with the same opportunities I had, mind you. Sorry, my patience for the Snap program  and other government ran aid programs ended a long time ago. I'm not even going to go into cards being traded for 40 to 50 cent on the dollar. That still goes on with the debit cards. I hate to get off into politics here but Government is not the answer to your issues, Obamacare is nothing but income distribution but it's not hurting the rich, it's hurting whats left of the middle class.

Here's an article on California turning into a feudal system from The Daily Beast, not what you call a conservative rag

http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2013/10/05/california-s-new-feudalism-benefits-a-few-at-the-expense-of-the-multitude.html

As for Obamacare, go google primary care in Mass and see how hard it is to get one and when you do how long it takes to be seen. The two weeks you are waiting is a walk in the park.

Wait, I did the leg work:

Joy, sorry about your predicament...  sounds tough! hope things turn around for you soon.....

Chitllins...   RIGHT ON!!

The house has sent multiple bills to the senate that would fund portions of the government. Harry Reid refuses to bring them to a vote unless they include funding Obamacare. That is what this whole shutdown is about. Neither side is willing to give an inch on Obamacare.

Unless King Obama gets his way, he's gonna hold us all hostage and make it hurt as much as he can to try to force republicans to do what he wants, and the press is his willing accomplice.

sanddunerider

replace the king.......................

Impeachment seems to be the only answer... ::) ::) ::)

Harry Reid has refused to pass a budget in over 5 year. He has been the main cause of crisis after crisis. He is trying to rewrite the constitution and take the House power of the purse away from it because it is Rupublican controlled. The  arguement in the Republican Party is stop kicking the can and make a stand.

Leon Panetta, a Clinista, CIA and Defense Dept.Head under Obama places lots of blame on the executive because of his lack of leadership.

History Buff

What saddens me is when I see folks who can't afford to feed their children, but they have nicer cell phones and bigger televisions than I have.  Their kids get free lunches and snack backpacks on the weekend, and free turkey dinners for Thanksgiving.  They are "adopted" by well-meaning church groups at Christmas, the Lions pay for their eyeglasses, etc.  YET, they still drink, smoke, buy lottery tickets, and hang out at the casinos.  The "assistance" they receive leaves their remaining money available for these activities, but if they could give up these activities, they might have enough money for the necessities.  It's a shame some people choose reckless behavior choices over self-sufficiency and pride.
