How about one more walk back in time before the 2014 season begins? Let's go back to 1979, and see some photos from the SDC employee newsletter that show people and places on the park...a month by month look at a few highlights for SDC. Also a couple of photos pulled from local newspapers for some things that would debut in 1980.

Some things you will see: A juice cart from which the fruit shaped plastic drink cartons were sold from, Shad introducing the Susan B. Anthony quarter, A banner day when 20,000 guests came through the turn styles, filming the Stan Hitchcock Show at the Courthouse Theater, construction at a new park called Whitewater, the old basket shop (current inspirational painter art gallery), and Senator John Danforth visits SDC.

My gosh Danforth looks young in that picture. What was he then about 30?

I was there on Sept. 29, 1979 - the day with 20,000 guests!  The hubs and I were married the night before, and we spent our very first married day at SDC.  It was a beautiful day, and park stayed opened an extra hour that night because of the large crowd.  It was a great day!!   ;D

Junior

I was there, too. Hope you will forgive me if I accidentally elbowed you or stepped on your foot in the busy city streets...that was not a fun day to be working...I was worn out. Blah! ;)

Junior, I was euphorically in love!  I didn't notice the crowd!  I do remember being thrilled when the announcement was made that they would stay open longer.  The hubs had never been there before, so he had lots of things to look at. Well, uh...you know, besides his beautiful bride!  LOL!!!! ;D ;D ;D

It's about housecleaning time again. I will purge my Flickr site within the next week or so to make room for new 2014 photos...the season is about here. Take another look before the things posted are wiped out and put back in the old filing cabinet.

History Buff

Never-before-seen pictures of the iconic Bob Hope at SDC for OTC:

I must admit, it felt like he was really being "handled".  After trucking to the square in a golf cart to turn on the Christmas tree, they trucked him into the Marketplace for autographs.  At this point in his life, it seemed a little like Weekend at Bernies.  Kind of sad.

Here is a slide/picture from 1968 of The Volunteer Fire Station at SDC.  Can anyone tell me what is located there today and using the same building with a few modifications.

Yes it is and still looks pretty much the same as 50 years ago.
