We got about 11-12" of fresh fluff yesterday, on top of the 4-5" still on the ground from Saturday.

No cancellations, just another regular February day in New Hampshire.  ;D

Swoosh

Yeah, but considering that New Hampshire is the size of some of the larger counties in Missouri, they better be able to get all of the roads cleared off in a decent amount of time

I live in a town of 3,500, and my job is 35 miles away in a city of 9,000. The county is three times the size of Taney County in area, but only 33,000 population. Except for the city (which does its own plowing), it was an easy drive at 55-60 on clear roads.

I did have to drive the truck, though... my plow guy hadn't come yet, and I couldn't get the mini-van out of the driveway.  ;D

My wife is on her 4th snow day this week (Tues-Thurs) where as we only were out on Wed, with a shortened schedule Tuesday that counted as a full. Back roads, were bad in rural areas(her school) whereas my school is fairly urban, and we don't have as many gravel and back roads.

My wife missed the whole week. West Fork has numerous roads that are not paved but gravel and mountainous. Our kids here in Fayetteville made Thurs and Fri but we have seen some models saying that Mon night into Tues for 6 to 10 inches of more snow.

The weather people really missed up on this one.  What was supposed to be "just a dusting" turned into 3" of snow in California today,  Needless to say, 50 is mess and we're out tomorrow.  This is #7 for us.  I wonder if I'll like going to school in June. *grumble*

Huntsville, AR has missed 18 days. The superintendent asked the state for permission to NOT make up all of the days. He says this means not letting out until mid June. I say, send them on Saturdays and keep them until they have made the days up. It's about the kids education, not worrying about politics. Watch your budget, and comply with rules or pay a penalty, administrators. It has been an unusual weather year, I know it is hard to plan for everything, but it seems to me asking for a waiver is a bit extreme, too.

Junior, I tend to agree with you on that..   I have other feelings about the days off and such, but with all the teachers and school rep we have on this site, with the I have respect for what they do, I am not going to voice them.....

On the other hand..... Branson- today.. another 2 - 4....... that's right-- SCHOOLS OUT!!!!  day number 13 for them.....

Missouri schools only have to make up 10 total days of school due to weather (other than extreme heat).  Once you hit 7, each days is counted as a "half make up day" until you hit 14.  Once you hit 14, any additional days are forgiven.  Arkansas would do well to draw up a plan much like what Missouri adopted a couple years ago.

This is Day #7 for me.  This is the most Snow Days I have EVER had as an educator.  I don't even remember ever having this many days off when I was in school myself.  It just seems to me that Central Missouri is not equipped to handle major winter weather like Northeast Missouri was.  I would imagine that this is even more so the case in Southwestern Missouri.

To be honest, I am ready to be in school for an extended period of time.  It has been darn near impossible to get back into a routine.  My sleeping habits are crap right now and it can be quite annoying at school trying to get the kids back into the habit of doing things as they are basically allowed to run wild at home.  Even when get to go back to school this week, we have Friday off for Professional Development and Monday off for President's Day.  See, there is no hope in getting in a routine this week -- oh and next week is Courtwarming, so you have that added distraction. *groan*

History Buff

We had several days off during the 2010/1 school year, and students only had to make up 10 of the days (as determined by Missouri law).  Administration wanted staff to make up all the days - after school was to let out for summer.  We were going to sit in professional development during part of June, thinking about when we might be able to prepare our classrooms for summer cleaning and summer school.

Then, the May 22 tornado of '11 came through, effectively cancelling the rest of the school year for us all.  I contend that God does not like 21st Century professional development.  The school board politely paid us for the remaining part of the year (I wouldn't have thought that would be in question.).  At any rate, we would rather have snow days than tornado days.

Everybody worries about it, but this year, even after making up 10 days, we will be out before June.  It's not a popular thought, but I'd rather have school when my kids can go outside for recess than these pent-up winter days.

In Kansas, I think it's pretty standard to just build snow days into your year from the start. I think my district does 4 or 5 built in snow days. So, for example, if the state says we had to have 180 days of instruction, our district calendar has 185 days. That's not strictly how they do it but it's close. I know a few years ago, we had 6 snow days. Everyone was worried we were going to have to make it up, but the only thing we did was not have any early dismissal for conferences, etc. Not sure what we'd do if it got to be 13 days, but I also think we're probably better prepared for snow here than the area around Branson would be. We had 4" this morning (unexpected) and we still had school. Probably shouldn't have, but we did.

I remember one year when I was in elementary school we used all our built in days plus some. We ended up going to school an extra ten minutes each day until the end of the year rather than having extra days added to the schedule.

Unfortunately, if we don't have any snow days in a year, we still do the full calendar.

Missouri requires 6 snow days to be built in.  School districts are required to go at minimum 170 days -- most will got 174.

I really dont know how many days this school district goes. I just know that they started the 2nd week of August this year, and the last day "was" scheduled to be June 6.  I just wonder what the last day will be now.

I went to that district growing up, and my cousins went to the neighboring district (at that time-the largest district in Mo so we was told). And I also started 2 weeks before them, and got out 2 weeks after them "every single year".

I can remember 2 different years in school going on Saturdays.   I think we went 5 Saturdays the first year, and 2 the last year.  So Yeah, Saturdays are doable, and probably referred over going till mid/late June.
