I've seen some video of Foggy Hollow, but I won't be able to see it in person.  Is there anything to it other than lights and theatrical smoke?  Also, does anyone know why Kent Rollins isn't there with his chuckwagon this year? I was going to try and make it down to see him again.    I tried some of his biscuits last year.  They were amazing.

Foggy hollow is just the trail from pumpkin plaza to boat works theater(previously the pumpkin trail). It's really just what you've seen, lots of hanging lights and haze.

It is pretty cool, but honestly I felt let down by it. I had seen some information about it saying that each light was individually programmable, and that it was synced to music. That had my expectations sky high. I was expecting town square level programmed lighting to music. With the 3 dimensional cube created by the lights it has the potential for some freaking amazing effects, but all I ever saw it do was just slow color changing fades. It was in tempo with the music but I expected a show not just lights changing color.

I have a background in lighting design, so that definitely plays into my expectations being high. I know what can be done with what they have, and it can be freaking awesome. As it is, it's cool but not a very big draw to come back and see it again. I think more pumpkins would have been a better investment, especially some more large ones that are real photo opportunities.

We attended opening day and I was very underwhelmed with the hollow. Way too much fog and all the lights did were slowly change colors. I was expecting new pumpkins on the trail as well and there were none. Just fog and lights and very "ethereal" music.
I was also disappointed with the many damaged pumpkins I saw still put out on display. Many with sections broken out to the point were you couldn't determine what the carving was originally. These need to be left out or replaced.
I also didn't think they were as thoughtful with the placement of some of the pumpkins this year. Some themes seemed mixed together or placed in random places.
I also noticed above the pumpkin stage the lighted letters only spelled out "pumpkins" like last year instead of "pumpkin nights" which it originally said.
The missing letters and the many damaged pumpkins makes me think they don't take much care when they store these things after the season.

It only said Pumpkin Nights for the first year in 2019.
They then changed it to Pumpkins in the City and it has said Pumpkins since 2020.

Ah! Makes sense! I hadn't thought about the name change being a factor.

I did notice a lot of pumpkin damage. I also noticed damage to various mum plantings and such. It seems people are letting their kids run amock in the decorated areas, sometimes to get pictures. I noticed some dbags letting their kids climb on the giant pumpkins for a photo. I also noticed one of the giant pumpkins was full of carvings where idiots were leaving their names. Felt like something you'd see at SF - SDC guests are "usually" better behaved!

They have added some split rail fencing around some of the giant pumpkins since earlier in the festival. I wonder if the locations plays into some of it. In their old location, it was along a path where people didn't really have a reason to stop and hang around by them. In their new location, people sit to wait on others riding the close rides or to eat snacks from the stand there.

I made a similar observation when security screening was implemented.

Hubs and I went yesterday and noticed the same thing - pumpkins appeared to be just set out and piled  randomly throughout the park. The carved ones following a theme seemed to be mixed up and placed wherever, also.  I thought it was more attractive last year.
