Is anyone here planning on being at the park Saturday, August 15 at 2 pm for the "Most Spinning Tops Spun Simultaneously"? I really wanted to last year, and am going to try to make it this year. Call it a bucket list item-Guinness Record participant...but also it would be a great excuse to get to the park again! They need 250+ to break last years record, and participants need to bring their own peg top thrown with a string-and keep it spinning for 10+ seconds...I need to find one and start practicing then!

There are 195 members of the SDCFans.  I think it would be a great time if we planned to take part in the 2010 spinning record attempt.  It would be a great time and place for the first ever SDCFans "Ya'll Come"

Great idea.  Maybe the group could get some ERT and some behind the scenes looks at things. Some meeting time with the higher ups would be fun too.

I am attempting to make a top from a $0.79 wooden egg from the craft store (seeing that our lathe is not operational at this time, it is the best I can do. I can get it to spin for nearly 20 seconds on a linoleum tile floor...I will see if I can get it fully operational within the week, well operational enough to necessitate a trip to participate on Sat. Oh I am not really this weird it is just that I do not have a top, nor does anywhere in the city here sell them! So I did the next best thing, made my own makeshift one. Maybe I will get "best makeshift/ functional homemade top" award.

UPDATE!!!
The top, now with a little sanding can easily go for  an average minimum of 30 seconds...hmm maybe I'll try for 40 next! It only has to go for 10 to count

Hmmm.  No comment.

OK, just this...admit it...you started this thread just so you could say you made a top, didn't you?

Okay I am that weird. BUT I did plan on buying a top and just going to the event. HOWEVER I could not find one. I thought if I stared a thread maybe some other SDCFans would join the festivities, THEN I decided to try my hand at making a top. It really isn't pretty at all, but it spins!

Is there nowhere on park that sells the necessary tops?

sdcforever

^There is.  Here's the info from the website:  "Tops can be purchased at the Homestead Barn which also has lessons in top spinning, given daily at 2 & 4 pm."

Are you going to actually make us ask for pictures?

:'( The event this year was not successful in the attempt to break the standing Guinness Record. I believe that they were short by 30-something (I don't remember the exact number). Understandably many of the participants had just that day picked up tops for their first attempts, and many did not keep their tops spinning for the 10 seconds needed to call the record broken. There is always next year, If my top made the 10 seconds and it took an hour to make, think of what I could do with it in a year! Not really, I will move on to  other things until I attend next year with more than likely the same exact top!

Well, you could have gotten some of that meeting time.. Pete H was on park spinning his top and taking questions while practicing and teaching top spinning.

Too bad about not setting the record.  Think they'll try it again next year?  (Perhaps third time's the charm? ;))

I wish that SDC would try this again. I understand that it is a lot of time, and organization to attempt to break a record. It was on my bucket list to break a record (didn't matter if it was as an individula or as a group) and I tried in 2008 but we came up a few short of the previous years total of 192. Guinness had originally said 200 or more needed to spin, but since it was a new catagory, they let 192 in the records.
I would go try it again with my hand carved homemade top.

Even though I DID get a record finally after 2 attempts at others. I helped make/ construct the world's largest serving of nachos at the KU relays in Lawrence KS this past weekend. It totaled 4,689 lbs breaking the previous record by 690 lbs. They used a total of :
860 pounds of nacho cheese
200 pounds of Salty Iguana's famous Iguana Dip
600 pounds of fresh salsa, tomatoes and cilantro
860 pounds of beef
1,200 pounds of beans
315 pounds of jalapenos
600 pounds of tortilla chips
for a total of 4,689 pounds of mouth-watering nachos.

First thought. That's a ton a nachos

Second thought, no that's almost 2 and a half tons of nachos.

Sorry. I know that's cheesy  ;)
